Brian McSweeney Obituary

Brian McSweeney, 91, died at the Pat Roche Hospice House in Hingham on June 6. Born in Boston, Brian was a life-long resident of Hingham. He attended the Hingham public schools and graduated from Goddard College in Plainfield, Vermont where he met his late wife, Catha (Levinson), to whom he was married for 62 years until her death in 2008. He served in the U.S. Navy in the north Atlantic during World War II. Brian worked for many years with his father, Thomas F. McSweeney, at McSweeney Associates, a civil engineering consulting firm, taking over the practice when his father retired and later passing it along to his son, Terence. In 2011, Brian and Terence travelled to Honduras to provide engineering services to an orphanage and school run by Mission Honduras. Brian continued to work with one of the firms clients until 3 weeks before his death. In the early 1950s, Brian was elected to the Hingham Planning Board, where he served as member and chairman for more than 20 years. For the next 60 years, he served in a variety of volunteer positions in town government, most recently as a member of the committee that oversaw the building of the new town barn. He was a Hingham volunteer firefighter in the 1950s and 60s. In 1976, he joined the newly formed Hingham Militia Company and soon became Captain, leading the company in the Hingham 4th of July parade for almost 30 years. Brian is survived by his children and their spouses, Patricia McSweeney and Raphael DuBard of Charlestown, Edward and Alison McSweeney of Halifax, Thomas and Stephanie McSweeney of Hanson, Margaret McSweeney-Martin and John Martin of Halifax, and Terence and Susan McSweeney of Hanson; 13 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren, with a sixth expected in October. Family and friends invited to visiting hours at Brians home at 150 Union Street, Hingham on Wednesday, June 10, from 4 to 8 p.m. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family would welcome donations to Mission Honduras (MA Board for Mission Honduras), c/o Judy Margetts, 95 Ward Street, Hingham, MA, 02043. I loved Brian, he always lit the room. I enjoyed meetings and working with him on Town issues. Always a gentleman! We are all fortunate to have had him in our lives as a friend and volunteer to the town. He made Hingham a better place and it will not be the same without him.
