Janet Vanderweil Obituary

Janet Letson Vanderweil died on Sunday, Feb. 13 at her home in Hingham. Janet was born Jan. 2, 1914 at home in Stelton, New Jersey, and raised there and in the nearby towns of Rutherford and Metuchen. She obtained a BA degree in History from Douglass College, in New Jersey, now a part of Rutgers, in 1935, and went on to work in Physical Education administration at the University. In 1939 she married Raimund G. Vanderweil, an engineer and recent immigrant from Austria, and in 1949 moved to Massachusetts when he started an engineering firm. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Mayflower Society. She was a member of the Community Garden Club of Cohasset and the Discussion Club. Janet was a history buff, an expert in her own genealogy as well as widely knowledgeable in western civilization up to and including current politics. She was widely travelled, and enjoyed theatre and bridge, as well as watching professional tennis, a sport she participated in as a youth. She was a people person, always interested in what her friends and acquaintances were about, and she followed the happenings of her immediate and extended families with intense interest. She leaves her three children, Raimund G. Vanderweil, Jr. and his wife Anne of Cohasset, Jane V. Gaillard and her husband Charles of Naples, FL, and William L. Vanderweil and his wife Lisa of Hingham, as well as seven grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be conducted on Saturday, Feb. 19th at 2 p.m. at the Second Congregational Church, 43 Highland Ave., Cohasset. Visiting hours and flowers omitted by request. I got to know Janet while visiting my mother Lorraine Carmick at Linden Ponds over the years. They were good friends and had dinner together almost every night. What a delightful woman Janet was! Always inquisitive about others, a lively conversationalist, with a wry sense of humor, quick to laugh. I enjoyed hearing about her life, her beloved children and grandchildren. She will be sorely missed by so many who loved her.
