Matthew Hickey Obituary

Matthew Paul Hickey, 47, of Hingham, died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2013, in the arms of his mother and surrounded by his loving family and members of the clergy. He fought a valiant battle against a rare and vicious form of brain cancer. Matthew was a gifted young man beloved by many from coast to coast. He graduated from Hingham High School where he did the art work for his year book. He received a degree in history, English and Irish literature from UMass-Boston. His degree was presented to him by his favorite neighbor Dr. Elizabeth Rawlins, a member of the Governor's Council on Education at the time. He worked for the Old Colony Newspaper in Plymouth and soon headed west to follow his dream with his best friend, James Cox. He worked his way up in the television business at Modern Marvels and soon established his own production company, "Workaholics, Inc." with another good friend, Luke Ellis doing a number of documentaries for the History Channel, Discovery, National Geographic and the Military Channel. His "The Real Story of Christmas" was rerun on this past Christmas Eve and Christmas morning. He was gifted in art, music and photography. He played piano and the trumpet in his high school band. He leaves his parents, Paul and Diane Hickey of East Bridgewater; a sister, Brenda of Bourne; and two brothers, Thomas of Colorado and David of Hanson. Also many beloved aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, dear friends and his Godchildren, Conor Hanley of Bourne and Shannon Hickey of Colorado. Special love to Eli Harris and all the nurses at the new Hingham Hospice on Turkey Hill Lane in Hingham. They gave Matthew loving care. A memorial service celebrating Matthew's life was conducted Saturday, Jan. 4, at 1 p.m. at the Church of St. John the Evangelist, 172 Main St., Hingham. His ashes were interred in St. John's Memorial Garden next to the church. Donations in his memory would be appreciated to the Paul and Diane Hickey Family Scholarship Fund, c/o the Hingham Institute for Savings, 55 Main St., Hingham, MA 02043, to be given to Hingham High School students. I am so incredibly saddened at Matt's passing... but at the same time, I can't help get a smile when I think of all the happy memories I have when I think of Matt. We started out together at Hearst-Jaffe (in 1995)and rose through the ranks as researchers, pitch writers, producers and directors. I sat across from MAtt for over a year-- and LOVED reading whatever he wrote (and hoped I could, one day, write as well as him). His acid wit always gave me a laugh, too. Watching him build a company with Luke (another Hearst-Jaffe) alum heartened me-- I am so proud of all they've built.

Matt was a rare talent-- he'll always occupy a place in my heart.

When I worked with Matt, I was the newbie. He always offered help, a kind word and any support I needed on my shows. He was quick with a joke, welcoming and he even filled in the "tribal knowledge" on the company when politics loomed large. Even in that limited, professional sliver of his life – he touched mine. My heartfelt condolences to family and friends.

Matt touched so many people here in Los Angeles through his formidable talents as a producer and writer; his kindness and generosity; and his sharp wit. He will be deeply missed.
