Alex Wormser Obituary

Alex Wormser died peacefully on January 31, 2019 at age 86, surrounded by family. He was born in Frankfurt, Germany to Otto and Eliza- beth Wormser. Thanks to the urgent warnings of two brave former work colleagues, the family narrowly escaped Germany just after Kristallnacht. They made their way to Oak Park, Illinois, where Alex graduated from high school in 1950. Alex lived in Marble- head for more than 50 years before moving to Atlanta, GA, last year. He graduated from Yale University, worked briefly for General Electric before starting a series of successful companies. He held more than 2 dozen patents for industrial technologies. Alexs life work focused on making the world a better place by finding inventive ways to solve vexing challenges. The past 14 years were spent reducing the impact of climate change. He developed a way to burn coal that eliminates nearly all of its emissions. The company founded for that continues the work. As a Holocaust survivor, he was also deeply committed to helping find peace. He enjoyed listening to classical music, and making puns | not necessarily in that order. He loved his family, cheering them on, feeling them struggles, and celebrating their successes. Alex leaves behind his wife Myrna, children Andrew and husband Tim Myers, Matthew and wife Amelia Gerlin, Julie and husband Fred Small, and stepdaughter Justine Fischoff. He also leaves behind grandchildren Nigel, Lucy and Finn, as well as 10 nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, his sister Dorothea and her husband Irving Stein. A memorial service will be held in the summer.
