Peter Lynch Obituary

Peter Matthew Lynch, age 66, died unexpectedly at home on Friday, Jan. 22, 2010. While a co-op student at Northeastern University, Peter was commissioned in the Army ROTC and worked at AVCO Corporation Research and Development in the Aerodynamic Design Group, the Thermal Evaluation Group, the Special Project Office and then the Decoy Design Group. After graduating from Northeastern in 1966 with a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering, he then trained as an officer in the Army Corps of Engineers at Fort Belvoir, Va. He was assistant project engineer on a high level bridge in Port Arthur, Texas, and then project engineer for the Hurricane Protection System, also in Port Arthur. From October 1968 to October 1969, Peter was an officer of the 610th Construction Support Company in Vietnam where he ran the quarry, asphalt, heavy equipment and maintenance platoons, including everything from rock crushing to paving and bridge crews. While there he earned the respect of both his men and the Montagnard (Mountain Yard People), indigenous to the area. Upon his return from Vietnam he enrolled in the University of Massachusetts master's program of environmental engineering. In 1972, he married Dorothy Latta of Marblehead, where he subsequently moved and had two wonderful children, Erin and Matthew Jamison, both of whom he was so very proud. Peter became a registered professional engineer for the commonwealth of Massachusetts while working at Whitman and Howard in Wellesley, and then in 1988, joined CDM in Cambridge, where he was a principal environmental engineer and project manager for public water systems, groundwater and surface water development and treatment projects. He was highly regarded for his work in water supply; treatment and distribution planning; groundwater resource evaluation; and development and water distribution system design and maintenance. He leaves a bereft family and many friends and relatives including his wife, Dori, of 38 years; his daughter, Erin and husband, Jamie Butters, of Wellsboro, Pa., Jamies two daughters, Jordan and Kaeli, Erin and Jamies daughters, Rowan and new daughter, Emery Mattea (born the day after Peters untimely death ... a testimony to the circle of life); his son, Matthew Jamison Lynch of Marblehead; his mother, Lois Coombs Lynch (104 and living in Camden, Maine); his mother-in-law, Joanne Latta, and his brother-in-law Tom Latta and family living in Newport Center, Vt. A memorial service will be held at the Old North Church, 35 Washington St., Marblehead, Friday, March 5, at 2 p.m. Relatives and friends respectively invited. I was sad to hear about Peter (my having moved from M'head). Peter was one of the nicest souls I've met. He was very gentle and sincerely interested in what you had to say and what you could learn together. He was really proud dad to his kids.

To Pete's family- Peter and I were classmates in high school (WHS '61)- he was of the nicest kids you would ever want to know. We have a close mutual friend in Marblehead, Bob Hugo. I was looking forward to seeing him at our next reunion- your loss is everyone's.

Matt, thinking so much about you and the family, and my deepest sympathy to all of you. Miss you guys, and certainly miss Peter! Chelsea was just talking about how much she liked talking to your dad at Rafe's wedding. He was a good man.

I sorry for your loss. I'll really, really miss Pete and the daily "theraphy" sessions we had discussing topics of the day. As I said, I'll miss him.
