Suzanne Newhall Obituary

Suzanne Sarra Newhall of Marblehead passed away peacefully on Saturday June 24, 2017. She fought a courageous five year battle with cancer and passed away after a brief stay at the Kaplan Hospice Center. Suzanne was the daughter of the late Robert L. Sarra and Anne Sarra of Swampscott and Redington Shores, Florida. She was predeceased by her brother, Robert L. Sarra II of Chicago Illinois. Suzanne was the proud wife of William F. Newhall II with whom she shared 62 years of marriage. She was the loving mother of W.F. Newhall III and his wife, Amye and Sarra Newhall Tubbs and her husband, Stuart as well as a grandmother to Piper Newhall, all of Marblehead. Suzanne was born at Lynn Hospital on May 3, 1933. She grew up in Swampscott, attending Swampscott schools and graduated from Swampscott High School in 1951. She was a stellar athlete and a Flora Dora Girl. She was honored to be inducted into the Swampscott High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2011. Suzanne graduated from Westbrook College in Portland, Maine where she also excelled in Field Hockey, Basketball, and Tennis. Suzanne married her childhood and lifelong love, Bill in 1955. After living in Connecticut and Ohio, they returned with their children to Swampscott. While looking after her family, Suzanne found time to enjoy the Bridge Club and the Bass River Tennis Club Crabs and Sour Grapes. She was also a member of the Junior Aid Society and received her 25 year medal. Later in Life, she truly enjoyed her time spent with the Lunch Bunch. Suzanne was a skier, an avid runner who could be seen every morning on the streets, and a daily communicant at many of the local churches. When traveling here or abroad she was known for seeking out a Mass to start her day always followed by a run. In the summer months, Bill and Suzanne enjoyed sleeping on their sailboat Suzanne in Marblehead Harbor as 34 year members of the Boston Yacht Club. This prompted them to move to Marblehead in 2004 where she could be seen running the streets of downtown. Suzanne also enjoyed memberships and time spent with friends at the Holy Ghost Society and the Palmers Cove Yacht Club. Suzannes true passion was traveling with Bill. She loved to fly. She was at her happiest when catching a flight, renting a car and setting off on the back roads of Europe to find hidden gems. They befriended many locals who would await their biannual visits. The couple would exercise their BYC reciprocity with a number of foreign yacht clubs. Costa Smeralda in Italy was among their favorites. Suzanne and Bill enjoyed several ocean cruises including the inside passage in Alaska and river cruises in Germany and Russia. The couple also traveled domestically and visited all fifty states. A highlight was their timeshare in Terra Verde, Florida where they enjoyed the St. Petersburg Yacht Club and befriended many member as well as the friendly staff who greeted them annually. We would like to acknowledge and thank the outstanding staff of MGH Neuro- Oncology Unit for their fine work. We can all take consolation, each in our own way, for having the privilege of sharing and being a part of a life well lived. At Suzannes request, arrangements will be private. We cannot argue with that. For additional information or on line guest book please call 978-744-0497 or visit www.MurphyFuneralHome. com.
