Marge Geary

1937 - 2016

Longtime Needham resident Marge Geary died Dec. 4 near Galveston, Texas. She was 79. Marge was born Aug. 27, 1937 in Skokie, Ill. She graduated nursing school and married attorney Thomas Geary in 1961. They settled for 18 years in Needham and had four boys and one beautiful girl by 1970. The home had everything a child could want. A backyard forest stirred the imagination, and a playing field and skating pond offered year-round athletic adventures. Marge was a board member at St. Josephs Catholic Church and the Needham Pool and Racquet Club, and used her nursing skills to comfort terminally ill patients. Marge enjoyed watching her children participate in sports, trips to Bermuda, dinner with friends at Callahan's, and she made certain her family always shared a memorable Christmas. Later, Marge earned an advanced nursing degree with a focus on mental health. She established in the 1980s a support group for nurses wrestling with substance abuse. Marge and Tom moved in 1988 to Philadelphia, where she worked at a psychiatric hospital. They retired in 1997 to Las Vegas, Nevada. Marge, a longtime member of the Sun City Art Club, painted landscapes and abstracts, which hang in the homes of family and friends. Widowed in 2007, Marge moved in late 2013 to Galveston. Marge was preceded in death by her husband and is survived by son James Geary, his fiance, Kimberly Cole, and her grandchildren and great grandchildren, of Felton, California; son Frank Geary, his wife, Juliet, and their two sons, Conan and Luke, of Las Vegas, Nevada; daughter Dr. Cara Geary of Galveston, Texas; son Mike Geary, his wife, Pam, and their children, Tadhg, Sawyer and Anabel, of Truckee, California; son Jed Geary, his wife Jessica and their sons, Connor and Quinn, of Hardwick, Massachusetts. A memorial service was held Dec. 12 in Galveston, Texas.
