William Ganick Obituary

William H. Ganick, 93, of North Hill Needham, formerly of Marked Tree Road, Needham, passed away on Sunday, August 14, 2011. Son of Dora (Shapiro) and Gershon, and pre-deceased by wife, Virginia Lapp Ganick, he is survived by his son, Peter Ganick of West Hartford, CT, daughter-in-law, Carol Ganick, and loving companion, Jane Welt of Needham. He was the last of six brothers and sisters and is survived by numerous nieces and nephews and brother-in-law Richard Lapp. A graduate of East Boston High (1930) and The School of Practical Art, Boston MA (1939), he began working at Harold Cabot Advertising in Boston in 1940 and became Advertising Director and later Senior Vice President, retiring after 40 years. Active in civic affairs, he served as a Needham Town-Meeting Member for twelve years, was on the Board of the Needham Philharmonic Orchestra, the Needham Historical Society, and the Needham Public Library. An artist by nature, he pursued pottery-making and was known as the Marked Tree Potter. He was an avid gardener, travelled and enjoyed making and decorating small pieces of furniture in his retirement. Mr. Ganick was a devoted contributor to the Boston Symphony Orchestra where he endowed two chairs. He was a faithful attender at the First Parish-Needham for more than fifty years. Donations in his memory may be sent to the First Parish Needham - Unitarian Universalist, 23 Dedham Avenue, Needham MA, where a Memorial Service will be held at 2:30 in the afternoon on Sunday September 25th, 2011.

We extend our condolences to Peter, Carol, and Jane. I was privileged to meet and talk with Bill through Peter and Carol on a visit to Needham in 2000, and thoroughly appreciated his gracious and charming company. I only hope that all family members will feel the comfort of knowing that friends share your sense of loss. Sheila Murphy
