Corey Griffin Obituary

Corey Christopher Griffin of Scituate, passed away as a result of a tragic accident in Nantucket, August 16, 2014, at the age of 27. The oldest of three children of Robert E. Griffin Jr. and Cathleen A. Griffin of Scituate, he is also survived by his beloved brother, Michael Patrick Griffin; and sister, Casey Mara Griffin. Corey was also the grandson of Frances Griffin and the late Robert Griffin of Scituate and Russell and Carol Bishop, also of Scituate. He also leaves his uncle and aunt, Christopher and Wendy Griffin, and their children, Kelly, Sean and Danny of Hingham; his uncle, Corey, and aunt, DeeDee Griffin, and their children, Courtney, Caroline, Willie and Charlie of Wellesley; his aunt and uncle, Mary Bishop and David McCormick of Scituate; his aunt, Patty, and uncle, Dean Hildreth, and their children, Katie, Craig and Jeffrey of Hingham; his aunt, Peggy, and uncle, Michael Oar, and their children, Michael Jr., Amanda and Christine of Scituate; and his uncle, Russ, and aunt, Lori Bishop, and their children, Kaylee, Jake and Lexi of Scituate. Corey was a proud graduate of Thayer Academy, the Taft School and Babson College, where he majored in entrepreneurship and finance. At each school, Corey was an accomplished varsity hockey player. His business career began at Bain Capital Ventures as an associate and, more recently, he co-founded RANE, an emerging company in New York City, where he served as the Director of Strategic Initiatives. Corey will be remembered for the love of his family and friends, the quality and quantity of his friendships and the limitless vigor with which he pursued life. His passion, spirit and love of his friends was known throughout the hockey world and beyond. After his competitive hockey days ended, Corey brought his passion to the outdoors and particularly to the ocean, where he led many fishing trips and searches for the best waves to surf on the South Shore. Coreys boundless energy, spirit, ability to find something good in everybody, passionate support and leadership of many philanthropic causes, never-quit attitude and the broadest of smiles are his legacy. A celebration of Coreys life was held at St. Anthonys Church, 10 Summer Street, Cohasset, Wednesday, August 20, from 2-7 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Anthonys Church in his honor Thursday, August 21, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the Griffin family respectfully asks you to consider donations to honor Corey C. Griffin to the following charities, the Corey C. Griffin Fund at Boston Childrens Hospital, Childrens Hospital Trust, 401 Park Drive, Suite 602, Boston, MA 02215 or the Corey C. Dear Rob and Cathy,
We are thinking of you! We find great solace in this poem - though Corey is not in sight, he is forever in your heart!

Gone from my sight- Henry Van Dyke

"I am standing upon the seashore. A ship, at my side,
spreads her white sails to the moving breeze and starts
for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength.
I stand and watch her until, at length, she hangs like a speck
of white cloud just where the sea and sky come to mingle with each other.

Then, someone at my side says, “There, she is gone”

Gone where?

Gone from my sight. That is all. She is just as large in mast,
hull and spar as she was when she left my side.
And, she is just as able to bear her load of living freight to her destined port.

Her diminished size is in me — not in her.
And, just at the moment when someone says, “There, she is gone,”
there are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices
ready to take up the glad shout, “Here she comes!”

Love,
Susan and Curt Gilmore

To the Griffin Family,

Hard to believe so many years passed now. Corey is thought of often. My son Chris talks about him when he has a hockey moment (which is often) and has positive memories of Corey. Always liked him and was impressed by his wit and how down to earth he was. God rest his eternal soul.

PLEASE ACCEPT MY MOST SINCERE CONDOLENCES FOR THE TRAGIC LOSS OF YOUR WONDERFUL SON, COREY. JOSH GROBAN WROTE A SONG AFTER 9-11 THAT PROFOUNDLY HELPED THE SURVIVORS THEN...THE TITLE I BELIEVE WAS "YOU'RE ONLY A BREATH AWAY". THINK OF COREY AS ONLY A BREATH AWAY. YOU KNOW, HE REALLY IS...ONLY ONE BREATH AWAY...SO CLOSE TO YOU. AFTER MY MOM PASSED, 4 MONTHS LATER, I SENSED HER HERE AT MY DESK AT WORK FOR ONLY A SECOND OR TWO BUT I SAW THE COLOR BLUE IN THE "SPIRIT"...SHE CAME TO ME AND I WAS ABLE TO SENSE HER PRESENCE THERE IN THE SPIRIT! I FELT HER THERE WITH ME. THEY ARE NOT GONE FROM US, ONLY "OVER THERE" A BREATH AWAY. MAY THE GOD OF ALL COMFORT TRULY COMFORT YOU ALL AND BLESS YOU AND MAY YOU FEEL GOD TOO DURING THIS VERY DIFFICULT TIME ONLY A BREATH AWAY. HE LOVES YOU ALL SO VERY MUCH!

Dear Rob, Cathy, Mike and Casey, and all the Griffin and Bishop families,
Randy, Brian and I are truly heartbroken for all of you. Just last week I was looking at the photo of the Kings Mite Championship in Lake Placid. All those beautiful young boys, who would go on to be accomplished young men. That was a special group of kids...and of course, Corey, a great kid, with a wonderful future ahead of him. He packed a lot of things in those too few 27 years, Rob and Cathy, but he lived, he contributed so much to other people's betterment. That was one special young man you brought into this world and now we all have to have faith that God really does know what He is doing. May you be comforted by all the love for your beautiful family, as we keep warm with all the wonderful, happy memories we all share. God bess.

Over the past several years I had the great pleasure of getting to know Corey. First through Babson and seeing him at Bain. Then just to talk fishing and exchanging both fishing stories and flies. Rarely ever actually met and talked work as was always our plan. He was the type of guy who made you think hard about how much he was able to accomplish for others others and why you should strive to do the same. I will miss telling stories with him and trying to get him out on the water. He will be missed.
Sincerely,
Chris
