Philip Jackson Obituary

Philip S. Jackson, a loving father and grandfather known for his bear hugs and sense of humor, died at home on April 1st of pulmonary fibrosis. He was 86 and lived in Scituate, his home of 55 years. A child of the Depression who never liked to waste anything, Phil Jackson was a Navy Radioman 2nd Class in the Pacific Theater and a commercial artist. He was born in 1923 in Belmont, Massachusetts to Philip Selwyn Jackson and Margaretta M. Jackson (ne Alcorn). He spent much of his early life in Belmont, finding and marrying his wife of 59 years there, Betty Lou Pensom, who passed away in 2007. In 1955, they made their home in Scituate and spent the rest of their lives in the beautiful coastal town. After graduating from what is now The Art Institute of Boston, Phil had a successful career in commercial art at the firm of Calderwood & Preg, of which he eventually became part-owner with his friend and colleague John Wilkinson. Phil and Wilkie drew shoe catalog illustrations for such companies as Cole Haan and Reebok. Phil got great pleasure out of many things in life, including attending Navy reunions with his daughter, Barbara; visiting his aunts in Nova Scotia; collecting stamps (he greatly disliked the new self-adhesive ones); gardening; and reading books. A very social fellow, he found that retirement didnt agree with him and soon took a job in a local bookstore, working beside his daughter Jo Ellen, for 5+ years. He was always ready to help a customer find the perfect book. He is survived by four daughters, Barbara Narlee, Lori Goodine, Jo Ellen Mitchell and Jennifer Butler, as well as 11 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, and his sister Marian. He is predeceased by his brother, Frank. A funeral service was celebrated on Tuesday, April 6th at 11 a.m. in the Richardson-Gaffey Funeral Home, 382 First Parish Rd., Scituate followed by burial in Fairview Cemetery, Scituate. I knew Phil for over ten years while he worked at Calderwood and Preg. He was a talented artist and illustrator, a wonderful person with a great sense of humor. He often spoke of his family – and always with great pride and affection. My deepest sympathy to all.

I’ve never met Philip Jackson. The Jackson family – that is, Philip’s grandparents – were just legends to our family. After eighty years we were able to renew contact with some of the family last summer and Philip’s cousin Carl MacLellan wrote to us:

‘Philip S Jackson Jr lives in Scituate. He is an extremely friendly nice man.’

We had never heard of Scituate before but we very soon we found out how true this description was – between July and February we exchanged messages, receiving sixteen emails and Facebook messages from Philip making up for the lost eighty years, identifying people in the old photos we had, telling us about his family now and asking about us, and asking us what we knew about the past. He was especially interested to discover the origin of his middle name which he didn’t know before.

When we saw his photo on Facebook we saw how much he looked like his own dad – we had his parents’ photos in our old collection. So he was for us a voice from the past as well as very much a voice for the present and future, with active emails and a growing Facebook entry. Every message he sent was full of new information and interest and he often thought up neat and amusing titles for them.

So at this time his Wimbush kin in England and Marion-Crawford family in Florida send all their sympathy to his grieving family.

Barbara, lori Jo Ellen & Jenny, my thoughts are with you as you make your way through the next few months. Your dad was the best (right along there with mine!)I loved his humor and hugs and comfort that he gave so freely, sensing when you needed one or all of them!! I always thought of him as an artist, his way of living and seeing things. I know how much he loved you all. And I know how much you gave to him in these last difficult years.Leslie and I will see you monday night. I think of you guys often and our connections thru our parents.

Barb, Lori, Jo Ellen & Jenny..our prayers are with you and your families during this difficult time. We met Phil during rehab at S.S. hospital in 1997..and enjoyed our many lunch dates with he and your mother. Phil was a great friend and will be missed by all.

I was the landlord for Phil and Wilkie when they moved their office to Braintree. They were great guys. Each was talented, amiable and generous. Their art skills were ledgendary and were a huge asset to the companies they served. We will never again see the likes of the illustrations Phil and Wilkie were able to create. I once bet them that they had not drawn every style of shoe in existance. The only way I won the bet was to produce a pair of antique wooden snowshoes. Within ten minutes the snowshoes were reproduced on paper with pen and ink... perfectly of course. These lost skills are another victim of the electronic age. The passing of Phil is a sad benchmark in the marketing industry.
I still have some of the art tools they gave away when they retired.
Presently I am in Florida and not able to be at Phil's service. Best wishes and condolences to his family.
