Albert Santoro Obituary

Albert A. Santoro

AGE: 79 • Wilmington

Passed away peacefully in his sleep on Monday, September 1st. He was born in Wilmington, Delaware on June 23, 1935 to the late Peter Anthony and Alfea (Nee: Neri) Santoro. He was predeceased by his sister Alberta Camoirano and wife Barbara K. Santoro.

Prior to starting an international supply and exporting business of high temperature flame and heat resistant textiles and products in 1994, Al worked for 30 years with the manufacturing facility, Haveg Industries.

At a very early age, "Big Al," as his friends would call him, discovered a love for playing reed instruments… first the clarinet and then the saxophone. In 1951, at the age of 16, he formed his first band, The Stardusters, playing mostly at school dances around the area. He later renamed his band, Al Santoro and the Hi-Liters, and has entertained those within the Tri-State area for 63 years - at more weddings followed by anniversaries followed by second and third generation weddings to count. In addition to playing in his own band, he was a member of the 287th Army Band playing for dignitaries, politicians, and even a couple of Presidents.

Most recently, Al truly enjoyed playing with so many countless and talented musicians from across the State as well as tooting his horn as a member of several area big bands. He forged lasting friendships from playing music and he always cherished the times he spent with his fellow musicians.

He loved music dearly, but also found great joy in gardening and spending time at the beach. Al always loved travel, and over time, had visited many countries outside of the United States (with Italy taking the number one spot).

From the bandstand at Bellevue Park to the boardwalk of Rehoboth Beach, Al brought unlimited joy to so many throughout our community. Behind the scenes, he was very active with area not-for-profit organizations helping to bring funding and awareness to each cause. These groups included serving the Board of Trustees for Societi da Vinci and Italo-Americans United; Chairman Emeritas of Delaware All-State Theatre; Delaware Hospice volunteer; and one of the first presidents to lead the Board of Trustees for Delaware Children's Theatre.

Albert Santoro is survived by his brother Arthur Santoro and his wife Renee of Landenberg, PA; his daughter Deena Santoro of Wilmington, DE; his son Anthony Santoro and his wife Kristina of Newark, DE; his son Nick Santoro of Wilmington, DE; his son Jeffrey Santoro of Wilmington, DE; his grandchildren: Ryszard, Dmitrik, Anthony, and Brandon.

Al will be missed dearly by his beloved nephews, nieces, extended family, friends, and his companion Doris Emory.

Family and friends are invited to visit and pay respects to Al and family at St. Anthony's of Padua Catholic Church at 901 N. Dupont St, Wilmington, DE 19805 on Friday, September 5th in the evening from 5 to 8 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Anthony's of Padua Catholic Church on Saturday, September 6th, at 10 am. There will be no morning visitation. Burial will be in All Saints Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Albert's name to Delaware Hospice, 16 Polly Drummond Shopping Center, Newark, DE 19711.

I met AL through my friends Jack and Linda McDermott. I was going through some photos last evening and came across some of AL. We used to keep in contact by email but hadn't been in contact for a few years. I Google his name and was shocked that his obituary came up. From the first time I met him I knew he was a very special person, his beautiful smile, and kindness showed that he was a true gentlemen. I had the pleasure of hearing him play his sax so many times in the years I knew him. But most of all I will remember him for his kindness shown to me when my friend Jack McDermott was sick , Al picked me up at the airport when I arrived in Philadelphia to spend time with Jack at the hospital before his passing, calling in each day to see Jack and the comfort shown at Jack's funeral.

Rest easy my friend. Heaven has received the most beautiful sax player I have ever had the pleasure to hear play. Love always your Canadian friendxoxo

Al ... It seems like we have been playing in bands together forever. We go back a long time, at least to H.S. years, (The Stardusters) and before.
But the band I remember being the best, and having the most fun in, was the one we took to Wildwood and played "The Riptide" then settled in "Moores Inlet" in N. Wildwood.... "The Hi-Five".(the renamed original Stardusters)
OH those Wildwood Days, and WOW those WILDwood nights.
Reat In Peace My Brother....
Jimmy.

Jeff and Family,
I hardly have a memory of the Nemours Italy trip without Al in it. He kept us laughing the whole trip through ... from his "lost" passport, his joining in with the band to sing on a whim to his getting us a table for 14 in a packed resturant without a reservation because he told the waitstaff (in fluent Italian) that he had "money, lots and lots of money"! He was simply a treasure and I was so blessed to have met him. He had the rare gift to make everyone, even complete strangers, SMILE through his wit with words and his breathtaking music. And, Jeff, I see a lot of his personality shine through you. He will be fondly remembered.

Harlem Nocturne was recorded by many artists: a slow dance tune that made you want to pull your girlfriend in close and float away. Nobody could play this sultry sax number better than AL. He will be remembered for so much more, but for me. …Thank You Al Santoro for that teenage memory and the honor of having known you.

I am a successful saxophone musician in Los Angeles. I was originally from Wilmington and Al was one my first saxophone teachers. My Dad was a big fan of Al's saxophone playing and I remember my dad sneaking me into clubs where he was playing. Al had such a great personality, everyone liked him. I even had the pleasure of seeing him about 3 years ago at my Dad's 80th birthday party and as a surprise my sister hired Al and his band to play for the party. I had a great time talking to him after not seeing him for 30+ years and even sat in with the band on my sax. What a great guy! He will be sorely missed by my whole family!

What I will remember most about Al is his ability to make others smile because his own smile was intoxicating. He made others feel good about themselves, without uttering a single word. Seriously ... I'm at a loss for words. You were the kind of guy who was so full of life and joy, it's hard to imagine you not being here any longer. I have so many fond, happy memories of you, but one of my favorites is when you came to my preschool music class to introduce the saxophone to my 3 & 4 year old students and them all happily dancing around you as you played "In The Mood". I remember how we laughed about that song choice! You were one of the biggest characters in my life and I loved you for your silly jokes, big bear hugs, and, most of all, your big hearty laugh. I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to know you, and call you friend. I'll never eat an Almond Joy again without thinking of you and how we used to playfully fight over them at DAST auditions. I will miss you more than you know, Sir, and I will hold your entire family close to my heart at this time.
