Ira Rosenberg Obituary

Ira Jack Rosenberg of Marblehead, Massachusetts and Boca Raton, Florida, entered into rest on March 28, 2019 at the age of 82. Beloved husband of Judy A. Rosenberg and devoted father of David Rosenberg and his wife Karen, Brian Rosenberg and his husband Ferdinand, and Lori Shane and her husband Jon. Cherished grandfather of Jordan Shane and his fiance Heather Petrovich; Shelby, Amanda, Whitney and Andrew Rosenberg; and Levi, Sadie and Ella Rosenberg-Van Gameren. Loving brother of Sandra Lebowitz and the dear son of the late Saul and Mollie Rosenberg. He grew up in Malden, MA, and attended Malden High School. At the age of 17, he enlisted in the Navy and proudly served his country for two years. He raised his family in Marblehead, MA and in 2014, Salem State Univ- ersity awarded him with an honorary doctorate. Ira Rosenberg got his first exposure to the automotive industry changing tires for a Chevrolet dealership in Cambridge in the 1960s. By the time he retired in 2017, he had built a family-run regional empire in partnership with his son David that now spans three generations. Rosenbergs signature broadcast jingle and popular television ads in the 1980s and 90s helped position Ira Motor Group as one of the most iconic, personality-driven automotive dealership brands in New England. He began his sales career on the floor at Sea Crest Cadillac in Lynn, MA, and immediately enjoyed success as a top performer. The start of what would become Ira Motor Group was established when Rosenberg acquired his first Toyota dealership in Danvers, MA in 1975. As the company experienced steady growth over a period of 25 years, Ira Rosenberg became a familiar figure in households across the region. He was often the central cast member in Ira Motor Group TV commercials, and the companys mem- orable jingle (Ira, Ira, zero down at Ira!) achieved a status all its own. After creating a business partnership with his son David, the two continued to grow the company and make a variety of strategic moves, including the sale of Ira Motor Group to the publicly traded Group 1 Automotive in 1999. Following a brief retir- ement, Ira established the beginnings of Prime Motor Group when he relo- cated to Maine and acquired three dealerships. Later, he would merge those operations with another company David had acquired | creating a strong market presence for the Prime brand in New Hampshire and Massachusetts as well as Maine. Once again, Iras offbeat and humorous performances in television commercials became a staple on local stations throughout New England. In little more than a decade, Ira and David Rosenberg built Prime into a regional powerhouse among auto dealership groups. By the time of his second retirement at the age of 80, Prime had grown to over 30 dealerships with 1,500 employees. Ira Rosenberg cherished every moment spent with his children, grandchildren, friends, and Prime family members. He was a long-time philanthropist of a diverse group of organizations and causes, including the Brigham and Womens Hospital, Lown Cardiovascular Group, the Plummer Youth Promise, Sweetser Maine Mental Health Services, Salem State University, Boca Raton Regional Hospital, in addition to many Jewish charities. Throughout his career, he personally helped countless individuals and families in need. A funeral service for Ira will be held on Sunday March 31, 2019 at 11 a.m. at Congre- gation Shirat Hayam, 55 Atlantic Avenue, Swampscott, MA 01907. Interment will follow in Congregation Shirat Hayam Cemetery, Beth El Section, 506 Lowell Street, Peabody, MA 01960. Shiva will begin following services until 6 p.m. at Kernwood Country Club, 1 Kernwood Street, Salem, MA 01970. Shiva will continue on Monday, April 1st and Tuesday, April 2nd from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Shane family home in Marblehead, MA. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in Iras memory can be made to the Plummer Youth Promise, 37 Winter Island Road, Salem, MA 01970 (plummeryouthpromise.org). My condolences to the Rosenberg Family, I had the pleasure of meeting Ira back in the mid 70's. I would enjoy discussing the values of pre-owned vehicles, and often he would purchase Toyotas from me for resale at his dealership. I was amazed how fast the Ira Motor Group grew. Always enjoyed talking to him at the auctions. He treated all with respect, truly a gentleman. Ira, You will be remember, Richard Neckers

Judy, David, Brian and Lori , My heart is so heavy to hear of your loss. Ira was an amazing man -- who gave me my first real job back at Danvers Toyota .. After a few nervous days as a new employee, I realized I had not just started a new job, but I became a family member! This is how The Rosenberg Family treated their employees! How wonderful are my memories of the entire family working in and around the office. Judy, with 3 adorable little ones , Saul and Joe in and out and even the dog... my love for you all still lives on as I always share my memories of your amazing family with my children and grandchildren. Ira was no only a successful business man, but a loving friend to all. My love and prayers ... Jo Anne Call

When I was a teenager, I believe in 1964, my Dad took me to Seacrest to help him buy a car. To this day, I remember and have frequently commented how Ira treated us with respect, dignity, and friendliness. I always have and always will remember him with fondness. He knew and practiced how people should be treated. Continued blessings on Ira and his family!

Dear Judy,

My love and prayers are with you and your family in the loss of a wonderful human being, your devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother. I only got to see Ira at the Malden High School Reunions. He supported all the classmates that couldn't afford to attend the reunions. He loved to reminisce the good old days at Malden High School. We were a special group of classmates. We worked hard to get good grades, go to college, serve our country, and made our parents proud of who we became today, Ira, not only became a successful business man, he gave back so much to the community in appreciation of what he had. Ira, you will be missed by so many people who knew and loved you. Rest in peace, my dear friend and classmate.

Ira was very charismatic and when he asked if I would organize the 55th Malden High School Reunion for the Class of 1955, I could not refuse him. Barbara Rosen was my Co-Chair and together we organized an entire weekend for our classmates: a Chinese Banquet at Kowloon Restaurant on Friday night; Saturday morning Ira hired a mini-bus to take classmates to Malden High to meet the Principal, Dana Brown, and view the renovations to the school, then a trip to Quincy Market; Saturday evening was our Banquet at the Sheraton (Ira hired the DJ and Comedian, provided the Cheese and Fruit) and dancing was enjoyed by all; Sunday Brunch was at the Hilltop Steak House. It was a wonderful time for our classmates to visit and create more great memories of our time at Malden High. Ira will always be in our hearts!
Judy, we send you and your family our heart-felt sympathy on your loss.
Much love,

This world was such a better place to have had Ira in it. In 1983, upon returning from my stint in the Army, I was hired to answer the Customer Assistance Phone for the New England Zone Of Oldsmobile Division. In an industry that was owned by domestic manfacturers and dealer networks, customers were lost in the big three's battle for sales and profit supremacy. (This climate led to some tough but needed lemon laws to teach manufacturers to take care of our customers) Ira Oldsmobile of Danvers was a different drummer. They were right at the top of the vehicle and service sales lists, but also were at the top of the Customer Satisfaction Index list - this was almost unheard of from a volume dealer. No high powered consultants or secret formulas caused this, it all stemmed from the humanity and genuine respect Ira had for all people. A real family man, (for years he had his elderly father sitting at a desk right beside him in his office) his friends and relations were everything to him. Goodbye Ira, thank you for all you did for my company. The world lost a real mensch this week

Words will never be enough to express my love for Ira and his family. Many years ago, this man took me under his wing and always showed me love and affection. I can still hear him bellow, "Mr. Jay how are you? What's doing?" Always concerned and caring about how others were doing. That was Ira Rosenberg. All of the accolades and tributes are more than deserved.
To Judy, David, Brian, Lori and their families, I extend my deepest sympathy. A few wonderful people touch our lives and my #1 will always be this man. Much love is sent your way.
