William Maloney Obituary
William Vincent Maloney, Jr., passed away peacefully - surrounded by family - on November 15, 2017 at his home in Upper Saddle River after having lived with cancer for a number of years. Bill was born May 28, 1944 in Teaneck, NJ to (the late) William V. Maloney, Sr. and Gloria Maloney. He received his BA and MBA from Farleigh Dickinson University and graduated as a licensed healthcare manager. He joined his father in administrating their thriving and innovative nursing home business in Bergen County, managing and growing The Cupola and Pine Rest in Paramus, Dunroven in Creskill, and Valley in Ridgewood. Together, they took great pride in caring for their elderly residents, and living by his fathers motto to treat the staff as well as the customers. In the early 1980s, noting business similarities, the family expanded their hospitality business into hotels, purchasing twenty acres of property from Tice Farms and developing the Woodcliff Lake Hilton in Woodcliff Lake, NJ, one of the first properties in the area to cater to upscale clientele and local corporations, including hosting the NY Giants prior to their home games at the Meadowlands, always a source of pride for Bill. His role as President and General Manager of the Woodcliff Lake property expanded as he developed the Hilton Pearl River in Pearl River, NY and in 1989 the Ocean Place Hilton Resort and Spa, which at the time was the largest development project in Long Branch, NJ. The Hilton Pearl River continues to be proudly family-owned and operated by Will Maloney, III and many longterm employees remain as part of that hotel family, as they have for many years across multiple properties. While he officially retired a number of years ago, his leadership and spirit continues. He loved his homes in New England and Florida, enjoying summers in Marblehead on the ocean, beautiful fall foliage on Squam Lake and winters at the Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo, FL. While his family teased him about his lack of interest in golf or tennis, he happily spent his retirement avidly following the stock market, reading and antiquing. He loved recount ing stories of some of the rare collectables discovered over the years in travels up and down the coast. He boisterously enjoyed a great meal, whether visiting a favorite restaurant or praising a loved ones cooking. We will miss his wistful recounting of his favorite dishes. He was admired for his work ethic, quick wit, and, especially later in life, his ability to take things less seriously and laugh at his lovable quirks. In his memory, we will continue to check our receipts for accuracy and be aware of the cheapest gas prices. Bill is pre-deceased by his wife of nearly forty years, Phyllis Maloney. He was also blessed to have had another loving partner in his life for a number of years, Rosetta Slattery, and her family. He is survived by his son, William V. Maloney, III and daughter-in-law Jessica Wahlstrom-Maloney of Piermont, NY and their two children Ruby and Nora; his daughter Meredith Tedford and son-in-law Jamie Tedford of Marblehead, MA and their children Nathan, Lucy and Whit; his 95 year-old mother, Gloria Maloney; sister Sharon DeVries; brother-in-law Ernie DiGiovanni and his wife Georgann, and other family and friends. Visiting hours were held at the C.C. Van Emburgh Funeral Home in Ridgewood, NJ on Friday, November 17th. A Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Gabriels RC Church in Saddle River, NJ on Saturday, November 18th. Bill was interred at Waterside Cemetery in Marblehead, MA. Donations can be made in his name to the Valley Hospital Foundation care of Luckow Pavillion, 223 North Van Dien Avenue, Ridgewood, NJ 07450.
