Benjamin Santoro Obituary

Dr. Benjamin Timothy Santoro died on Saturday, September 9th, 2017 at his home in South Chatham, MA, formerly of Dover, MA, at the age of 88. Ben is survived by his children, Benjamin, Jr., of Dover, MA, Peter, of Pensacola, FL, Ian, of Delmar, NY, Kip, of South Natick, MA, Jed, of Littleton, MA, and Kyle, of Medway, MA; by their mother, his first wife, Marion Hebberd Santoro, of Dover, MA; by his step-daughters Natasha, Alexandra, of Durham, NC and Janine, of Richmond, VA; and by eleven grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his daughter, Alysa Santoro, and by his second wife, Janine Cauhape Santoro. Ben was born on June 15, 1929, in Montgomery, NY, to Benjamin Marco Santoro and Loretta McEvilly Santoro. He is predeceased by his siblings, Gloria, William, and James; and survived by his sisters, Natalie Ann, and Sally. After graduating from Storm King Preparatory School, Ben earned degrees from Yale University and Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He completed his residency training at the University of Minnesota and Mass General Hospital, and moved to Dover, MA with his family in 1961. Shortly after arriving, Ben established a private medical practice, serving as a general practitioner providing care to the people of Dover and surrounding communities. He also served for many years as Chief of Emergency Medicine at Leonard Morse Hospital in Natick, MA, before finally retiring to South Chatham in 1988. A brilliant physician, as well as a beloved father, husband, and brother, Ben touched many lives. As one of the last doctors to make house calls, Ben developed deep and lasting connections with many of his patients, often treating entire families over the course of many years. As Dovers unofficial town doctor, Ben had the trust of all of his patients, many of whom came to love him for all that he did. As a physician, Ben was perhaps most proud of his abilities as a diagnostician, which saved many lives. But while Ben loved being a physician, he never let go of the idea that he might have loved teaching as well, history and literature in particular. After completing his English major at Yale, Ben did in fact teach English for a time at the Westminster School in Simsbury, CT, an experience he treasured and fondly recounted many times over the years. Friends and family will always remember him as someone larger than life, and a true renaissance man. Bens family loves him dearly, and will miss him always. A funeral is scheduled for 10:00 A.M. on Thursday, September 14th, 2017 at the Church of the Most Precious Blood, 30 Centre Street, Dover, MA. Rev. John J. Grimes will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Dover, MA. All are welcome. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation in Bens name be made to the charity of your choice. The family would like to offer special thanks to Lou Maloof and to Bens caregivers, Diana Ellis, Jody McCollough, Barbara McGuire, Danielle Letendre, Ellen Garvey, Heather Roberts, Linda Maw, Mary Amsler, Kathleen Marse, Penny Bache, Sharlene Sowers, Solange Nunes, and Sonya Joy. You took such loving care of our father, and we are forever grateful. Online guestbook at gfdoherty.com. Arrangements by George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Home, Wellesley.

Ben was like a doctor that I had never had before or since...He saved the life of our son Joe who was born with both collapsed lungs, he didn't think we were going to take him home. With Ben's quick thinking we did take Joe home. After Cancer surgery my husband was walking the halls of LMH and Ben took one look at him and said John you need to get into bed you have a blood clot..I will miss seeing Ben coming out of the Squire and getting that hug he always gave me!!! Ben you were loved by many and you made the world a better place!! Thank you!!

Bad day when I heard the news of this stellar Doctors passing on!
Besides being the wise, caring and highly compassionate/straight forward Doctor that he was, Doctor Santoro was also the kind of Doctor that we sadly do not see in our crazy society today and perhaps will never see the caliber of Doctor that Ben Santoro was ever again.
In retrospect, I was very fortunate to have someone like Doctor Santoro as my Doctor during my early childhood and adolescent years and he will be missed dearly.
Quite a few, "(not all)," Doctors today could definitely stand to learn a lot from Doctor Santoro's example on care, especially when it comes to using good bedside manners and putting the person first before the profit.
My deepest thanks for all Doctor Santoro did for myself and my family growing up, and my deepest condolences go out to all of Doctor Santoro's immediate family, close friends and of course all of his former patients.
RIP good physician.

My heartfelt sympathies go out to family and friends during this difficult time. I hope that the promise found in 1 Thessalonians 4 : 14 can bring some comfort. Knowing that there is a future for the ones we have lost in death can be so reassuring.

I was crushed when Dr Santoro stop practicing. He was our Family doctor for years and no one has ever come close to this mans bedside manner. He was a soft and gentle man, who when in deep thought looked like he would rub his face off thinking. I will now miss him even more. To his family, wishing you comfort and peace as you grieve your loss. He was a wonderfull man to all who knew him. RIP

As a former patient I dearly loved him. I was his first patient at the Leonard Hospital. Last year I talked to him by phone, to let him know my husband had passed away, both Gordon and I worshipped him. He will be missed. RIP Ben.

It is impossible to list all the wonderful memories I have of Dr. Ben. We met in hospitals, at parties, had long talks on every subject I can think of. He watched over my family, my children, over me. He was uniquely amazing and warmhearted and we all adored him.
