Everett Sugarbaker Obituary

SUGARBAKER, M.D., EVERETT VAN DYKE, died unexpectedly of natural causes on the 5th of February 2006 at his home in Miami, Florida. He was 65. He was born in New York City, New York to Everett D. Sugarbaker, MD and Geneva I. Sugarbaker. He grew up in Jefferson City, Missouri and graduated from Jefferson City Senior High School in 1958 and Wheaton College, Illinois in 1962 with a major in chemistry. In 1966, he received his medical degree from Cornell University Medical College in New York City. He graduated as a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. His five years of general and thoracic surgical training took place at the prestigious Massachusetts General Hospital, a Harvard University affiliate. In 1973, he completed the rigorous surgical residency program. As a commissioned officer with the United States Public Health Service from 1968 to 1970, he received specialized training in surgical oncology for two years at the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland and one year at the M.D. Anderson Hospital in Houston, Texas. In 1975, he accepted an associate professorship in surgery at the Jackson Memorial Hospital, University of Miami where he practiced general and thoracic cancer surgery. In 1980, he founded the Miami Cancer Institute where he pursued a different approach to the treatment of cancer patients. He organized a multi-disciplinary team of physicians to provide comprehensive care. His private practice, Surgical Oncology Associates, located in Miami, was a research based private practice that treated a wide diversity of cancer patients. He performed surgery on head and neck, thoracic, gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal, and dermatological cancer patients. Dr. Everett Van Dyke Sugarbaker was one of the most comprehensively trained cancer surgeons of his generation. He was as technically accomplished as any cancer surgeon can be. In addition to his Miami-based medical practice, he also contributed to the advancement of medical care in Ipiales, Colombia. Following the 1999 earthquake in Colombia, he helped to rebuild hospitals and nursing homes in Armenia, Colombia. He also served on the boards of numerous charitable organizations advancing health care in disadvantaged parts of the world. He retired from his private medical practice on the 31st of December 2005 having published numerous manuscripts, written many book chapters and books, and delivered countless lectures on cancer surgery in Florida and around the world. He was an avid long distance bicyclist, accomplished fisherman, and world traveler. He climbed many mountains including Pikes Peak in Colorado. In addition, he enjoyed collecting antiques. On the 23rd of January 2000, unfortunately his son Everett M. Sugarbaker died at age 28 of melanoma. He was studying to become a physician as well. The family will receive visitors on the evening of February 8, between the hours of 7 and 9 p.m. at the Van Orsdel Funeral Home, 4600 SW 8th Street, Coral Gables, Florida. Services will be held on the morning of February 9 at 11 am at St. Phillip Episcopal Church, 1142 Coral Way, Coral Gables. A graveside service will follow immediately at Woodlawn Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to the St. Phillip Memorial fund in memory of his son, Evere tt M. Sugarbaker, St. Phillips Episcopal Church, 1142 Coral Way, Coral Gables, Florida 33134. Everett is survived by his mother Geneva, wife Myriam, daughter Katy Caliguiri and her mother Catherine, and two grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son Everett M. Sugarbaker. He is also survived by nine brothers and sisters, Paul, Rena Pedersen, Geneva Surgarbaker, Eve Tolley, Deborah Digges, Constance Moore, David, Elizabeth Akre, and Steven. To his family, friends, and patients we extend our deepest condolences. Perhaps his patients, thousands in number, will miss him most of all. I remember not wanting to have look Dr. Sugarbaker in the eyes after learning of his son´s passing. How could Everett have saved my life from Metastatic Malignant Melanoma and yet his son passed from Melanoma. I had survivors guilt. He put his hand on my shoulder and said Dr. Jacobson we can´t be responsible for other people´s cancer. I felt it was so unfair that I was still alive and his son who was following in his footsteps passed away. He said cancer doesn´t care who we are. There were several individual melanoma stories that he shared with me and I was the 2nd that survived from an unknown primary. It was only due to him that I am still here today 32 years later (a week before hurricane Andrew).

Another extra year to remember this great, compassionate topflight person and doctor. I only expected one year, then five years had passed. I asked Dr Sugarbaker what I should do, he said most doctors go back to treating people. So, I did. August 17th marked an extra 30 years.

So many fond memories of you, Dr Sugarbaker. It was an honor to have worked with you and serve as your 1st P.A. I still remember all the classical CDs during surgery & when we were closing it was time for Roy Orbison.. The knowledge and work ethics you instilled in me, carries over to my hospice patients I see on a daily basis. You blessed so many lives. I know you are resting in a very special place. You are missed.

Dr. Sugarbaker saved my life in 1992. I was pregnant with my first child and was diagnosed with malignant melanoma on my right leg. I was very nervous & frightened, but he made me feel at ease with his kindness and understanding. He really cared about each of his patients. He is truly missed.

Dr. Sugarbaker saved my mother's life in 1984, when he removed the cancer that had matastasized from her colon to her liver. Several years later, he saved her life again when he operated to remove abdominal adhesions which had obstructed her digestive system. For years I have felt proud and reassured that I knew one of the worlds greatest cancer surgeons. He was not only great because of his skill and knowledge, but because he truly cared about his patients. I am very sorry to hear that he is gone. I would have wanted him to have many more years, because he deserved the best that life can offer and because we so needed him.

Iam so sad to lose Dr Sugarbaker, he saved my life, I already had one breast surgery and was told I would have to lose my breast theycould not get it all. I walked out thanked him and left. I called my maid to share this story; her mother had been previously treated by Dr. Sugarbaker and my maid referred me to this wonderful, intelligent doctor. he didnt hesistate, he took me right in and operated on me. 1 week later, after the surgery he reassured me i would keep my breasts and the cancer was all gone. afterwards he took care of me with a visting nurse and all. This was in 2002, and I am still cancer free. my condolences to the

What a shock!!! A WEEK BEFORE HURRICANE ANDREW Dr Sugarbaker operated on me for metastatic malignant melanoma. There was a 10% chance I'd make it 1 year, yet here I am 13 years later with a possible recurrence and the "General" of my health care is gone. We are are so lucky to be here to sign this guest book. I wish you all the best of Health.

Sincerely,

Dr George F Jacobson

I thank G-d for a doctor like Dr. Sugarbaker. I am here after 19 years for breast surgery. He not only took care of me so well; he was there with answers for any kind of medical problem I needed to discuss and I had so much faith in his answers. He was never wrong. He was my "rock" and I cried knowing he didn't have the time to retire and enjoy the things he wanted to do. If anyone in this world deserved enjoyment of his later years, it was this wonderful doctor who was always there to allow others to enjoy their lives.

May he be watched over with love forever.

My greatest condolences to his family.

In 1986 when my husband was diagnosed with stage 3 melenoma, we were devestated. His prognosis was not good. Living in the islands, we didn't know where to go or who to turn to. Since my husband had been to Dr. Paul Dermer in Miami, we decided to get his opinion and by the grace of God he referred us to Dr. Sugarbaker. Twenty years later my husband is cancer free thanks to this wonderful caring man. We will forever be grateful to him. Our deepest sympathy and condolences to his wife and family.

i was shocked and saddened to hear of Dr. Sugarbaker's passing when I called the office today. Fourteen years ago I was diagnosed with stage three inductal breast cancer and given 6 months to live. I immediatley sought out other opinions in the south florida area and given various opinions similar to the above as well as a recommendation for bone marrow transplant. I chose to do nothing and prayed to God for an answer. About a month later, at a wedding I attended I met a friend of mine who was a general practitioner and inquired as to who he referred his cancer patients to for treatment. Dr. Sugarbaker's name was first on his list and the rest is history. He saved my life and that of my family. I now have four grandchildren and enjoy them every day of my life. God rest this beautiful man's soul and the most sincere condolences to his family.

There are not enough words of kindness to express the wonderful care Everatt gave my mother during her many years as a patient, friend and collegue. For 35 years Dr. Sugarbaker watched over us and care for us. My mother passed away last year after a valiant battle with breast cancer. We had 3 years more because of the amazing care Dr Sugarbaker gave her. I also had the priviledge of seeing him on the last day his practice was open. He spoke of excitement over going to Africa and making a difference for the Medical Clinic and the girls orphange he was going to be apart of. Once again, he was going to make a difference in the world. He will be sorely missed. The world lost a great doctor and human being when he died.

When one reads a familiar name in the obituaries, many thoughts come to mind about that person. I lost a couple of good friends last year when Joycee Wax (Court reporter) and Judge Henry Latimer (Attorney at law) met an untimely demise.

Seeing Dr. Sugarbaker's name over the past couple of days and reading about his many accomplishments only solidifies my deep appreciation that I will always harbor for this great doctor, husband and father.

As a court reporter, I had the pleasure of meeting and reporting depositions where the good doctor was the witness. Little did I know that Dr. Sugarbaker would come to save the life of my present and only wife, Ellen.

In the early 1980's my wife was diagnosed, by Dr. Paul Simon, a dermatologist, with a melanoma on her thigh. It was, at first, an innocuous mole that suddenly transformed into an unsightly mass of pus and total discoloration.

My wife was referred to Dr. Sugarbaker in short order and the news was not good at all. At the time the doctor had diagnosed her with a Clark Level IV melanoma, and told me there was a 65% chance that this condition would take my wife out for good.

It wasn't long before Ellen came under the complete care of Everett and he decided to operate immediately. She emerged from the operation with a huge 10-inch scar on her thigh and minus a lymph node in her groin... a very agressive operation and care plan, to say the least, but she remains cancer-free over 20 years later.

Myself, my wife and two lovely daughters, Stacey Jill and Marla Beth, will alway be thankful of the good deed this man has done for us and countless others in the world he travelled in and on.

I would like to extend my sincerest condolences to the family and thank every member of this fine family for making it possible for Everett to live the life he lived and be so helpful and giving to all he came into contact with. May he rest in peace and never be forgotten by all who knew him.

I grew up with Everett in Jefferson City, MO. I knew the whole Sugarbaker family. My deepest sympathy to all of you, brothers, sisters, wife and child. I lost my husband of 41 years on Father's Day, 2004. It was a shock, but I have learned how to survive without him. I had thought of calling Everett just to talk, but never got around to it. I knew he was a cancer surgeon, but had no idea the many great things he had done. May God truly bless you through this difficult time. Try to look for the blessings along the way. I think Everett would want that.

My deepest condolences to the family of Everett Sugarbaker. He literally helped save my life. After my initial diagnosis I went to a number of renowned cancer centers for consultation and was told that one of the finest oncological surgeons in the world was right in my home town. I immediately went back to Dr. Sugarbaker. I thought he might be slighted because I went for other opinions however his response displayed his humility, humor and caring. He said with a twinkle in his eye, "now that you've been all over the country researching, you can probably teach me some things". The entire office broke into laughter. He will be very much missed.
