Biruta Z. Jakobsons

1932 - 2021

Biruta Zilmanis Jakobsons, 89, a long time resident of Wayland, died on Saturday, May 1, 2021 following a period of declining health. She was born in Riga, Latvia on April 16, 1932 the daughter of the late Ernests Zilmanis and Alvine (Ranka) Zilmanis. Biruta was the beloved mother of Ivars Jakobsons and his wife Carol of West Newbury, Andris Jakobsons and his wife Holly of Hudson and Kim Thurmond and her husband Bo of Newton. Sister of Ilona Castro and her husband Roberto of Bluffton, S.C. Biruta also leaves six grandchildren, Mathew and Holly Jakobsons, Joshua and Jason Jakobsons, Jack and Caroline Thurmond. Forced to flee Latvia with her family at the age of twelve, Biruta eventually emigrated to the US where she attended Middletown High School. She would graduate from the University of Connecticut and go on to become an accomplished pharmacist with Medco and Professional Pharmacy prior to her retirement. Biruta loved tending to her gardens every spring, sharing stories of her Latvian heritage with her grandchildren, and cheering on her UCONN Huskies and Boston Celtics.
