Edward Salzberg Obituary

Edward Salzberg, 93 , of Hyannis, died June 30, 2017. He was born in Milford, son of the late Samuel and Sarah (Greenwald) Zaltzberg. Ed was the dear husband of 65 years of the late Doris (Liberman) Salzberg. From a young age, Ed was fascinated by radios and electronics. After graduating from Chelsea High School, he worked for the Signal Corps in Kingman, Arizona, and served in the Army Air Corps during World War II as a radio operator in B-17s. Following his military service, Ed worked for the CAA (the precursor to the FAA) at Logan Airport. While at Logan, he devised a method of testing airplanes radar systems that reduced the test time from 2 hours to 2 minutes. His method was put in place in eight major airports, and he was awarded a $50 prize. He then worked at Microwave Development Labs in Wellesley, where he rose to the position of Chief Engineer, designing components and subassemblies for communications and radar systems. Ed founded and was president of Atlantic Microwave Corporation in Bolton, where he held more than a dozen US and international patents for components used in systems ranging from military aircraft to weather radar to Mars Rovers. After living 26 years in Wayland, Ed and Doris retired to Cape Cod, where Ed enjoyed walking on the beach, boating, collecting nautical memorabilia, and coming up with complex engineering solutions for simple tasks. He was the brother of the late Irving Salsberg and his wife Estelle of Boston and the late Rose (Zaltzberg) Brodie and her husband Sidney of Danvers. Ed is survived by his children Phyllis Thomason and her husband Robert of Wayland; Judith Lake and her husband Howard of Concord; Marc Salzberg and his wife Marty of Oceanside, NY; and Charles Salzberg of Erving; his grandchildren, Alexis (Kalmer) Lamont and her husband Michael of Natick, Sarah (Salzberg) Charles and her husband Chris, of New York City, and Darren Thomason of Cambridge; and his great-grandson Michael S. Lamont of Natick; and many nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by all. Interment was in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne. Donations in his memory may be made to the Cape Cod Times Needy Fund (http:// needyfund.org). Arrangements were by the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 74 Algonquin Ave., Mashpee.
