Mark Steiner Obituary

Dr. Mark Steiner, 70, loving husband, father of three and grandfather of three, passed away on December 17th, 2020, Born on May 31st, 1950 in East Lansing, Michigan, Mark was the youngest son of Dr. S. Daniel and Jean Steiner. He attended Cranbook School (1968) where he played football and hockey. Football brought Mark to Harvard (1972) where he was a starting defensive lineman. Mark eventually followed his father's footsteps into medicine and graduated from Columbia Medical School in 1978. He returned to Boston to train at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he met his wife, Dr. Mary Ellen McCann and went on to become Chief of the Orthopedic Sports Medicine Service at the New England Baptist Hospital. During his career, he authored dozens of research papers and developed several innovative medical devices. Most importantly, medicine allowed Mark to return to Harvard Stadium as the team physician for the football team. He was a fan of double bogey "Ivy League" golf, conservative politics, sailing, the Patriots and Harvard athletics. His favorite place on Earth was the "cove" on Glen Lake in Michigan, where he spent summers growing up and returned each year with his own family. He collected friends throughout life and was known for his wry sense of humor. As a devoted husband and father, Mark frequently said that his best decision in life was to get married and start a family. He was beloved by his patients and tackled life's challenges with unflagging determination. Mark was diagnosed with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy in 2017. He endured the disease with grace and dignity. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen, his children and their spouses, Ben Steiner and Linda Li, Sarah Steiner and Drs. Maria and Oleg Yerstein and by three grandchildren, Daniel Steiner, Robert Steiner and Elita Jean Yerstein. He is also survived by his siblings, Martha Caesar and Tom Steiner, their spouses and children and many friends. A wake will be held at the George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Home at 477 Washington Street in Wellesley from 5 to 8 p.m. on December 22nd . A private Funeral Mass will be held at St. Paul's Parish in Wellesley. In the summer of 2021, an ash scattering ceremony will be held at the top of Miller Hill in Glen Lake, Michigan. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in tribute to Mark at psp.org/steiner. Dr Steiner performed a knee surgery on my right leg when I was unable to pay him. He charged me half to get the necessary surgery done. He did a great job and was a very nice man. I still owe him the other half and have always felt terrible about not having the money to pay him. Most Doctors would have passed on helping me Dr Steiner did NOT ! God bless him

Mark, or Dr. Steiner as most patients referred to him, was my surgeon for nearly 10 years. Throughout all of my medical procedures and ups and downs, his medical acumen was second to none. When my mother was first diagnosed with breast cancer, he went so far as to contact another large Boston healthcare facility to have her established as a patient. I'm very saddened to hear of his passing and wish his family well. The world has lost a caring, talented, and determined doctor.

I am absolutely shocked to hear of the passing of Dr. Steiner. Dr. Steiner performed surgical repairs for 2 of my torn muscles over the years and I never forgot how professional, sharp, affable and that glint in his eye if you pulled a smile out of him. Such a good guy. I am floored. This is one of those passings that gives pause and challenges one to self-evaluate to make sure they have their life priorities straight with men like Dr. Mark Steiner. This is a considerable lose for his patients, community, and of course his family and friends. My deepest sympathies.

Dr. Steiner had great talent talent and accuracy in recommending the appropriate treatment and eventual ACL Replacement and later revision allowed me to continue to be active with little people at work in Early intervention for 28 years. When my husband Mark Hayes and I were planning on having or adopting a child in 1999, Dr. Steiner performed my first ACL replacement and in 2007, when I wore the cadavers ligament out Dr. Steiner completed a ACL revision. His care and kindness helped me through these procedures and other wear and tear injuries. I am sending my condolences and deepest sympathies to his family. Dr. Steiner was truly a great man and truly a gift to his family and all that were fortunate to meet him professionally or personally.

Deepest condolences from very old Glen Lake family friends. We remember Mark as a wonderful teenager hanging around on our docks on beautiful summer days. We didn’t know his life and career as a distinguished physician, only as a fun, kind, wonderful human being. Rest In Peace and know you will be missed by many.

Dear Steiner Family,

I'm so sorry to learn of Mark's passing. I have the greatest respect for him. He treated me when I broke my ankle in three places back in 1984 when he was with Mass General. He was very helpful to me and showed a lot of care in my healing process. I'll always be grateful to him. I'm very saddened by his untimely passing. Please accept my sincere condolences.

I will always remember helping Mark with his decision about wearing bifocals in the operating room. He was reluctant, but he admitted, after using them, it was a good recommendation. I will remember his spirit, and his smile.
Sincere condolences to his family, and friends.
