Thomas was born March 12, 1954 in Detroit, Michigan the son of Katherine (Barnhouse) Whitefoot and Kenneth Whitefoot. Tom had resided in Lake since 1998, moving from Farwell. Tom was united in marriage to the former Pamela Pitt on October 10, 1998, in Clare.

Tom dedicated over twenty-five years in the oil industry as a driller and retired from Ferrellgas after twenty-two years in the propane industry as a propane transporter. He also enjoyed spending time visiting various casinos, playing cards, watching the Weather Channel and reporting the weather to his family, monitoring emergency services on his scanner, and listening to 70's rock, especially channel 26 on Sirius XM. One of Tom's favorite pastimes was making memories with his loved ones. His family fondly remembers him being Santa Claus every year on Christmas morning, watching storms together and taking various camping trips. In addition, Tom was passionate about helping others. He was often found in the middle of many projects lending a hand, or helping those in need. He would even deliver iced water to local firefighters on the scene of a fire.
