Doris Lindvig Obituary

Doris Lindvig
November 1, 1925 - July 16, 2025
Doris Claire (Nelson) Lindvig, a long-time resident of Williston, ND and most recently of Bismarck, ND, joined her parents, siblings, husband and cherished friends in Our Father in Heaven's embrace on July 16, 2025. She was under hospice care at Benedictine Living Community in Bismarck, ND.
Her Funeral Service will be held on August 30, 2025, 10:00 a.m. at First Lutheran Church. Inurnment at Riverview Cemetery following fellowship.
Visitation will be held at Everson-Coughlin Funeral Home August 29 from 9-5, with family greeting callers from 2-5.
Doris was born in Plaza, ND on November 1, 1925; the 4th of six children born to John (Jack) and Julia (Linde) Nelson. Doris graduated from Plaza High School in 1943. In 1944 she entered the United States Cadet Nurse Corps in Minot, North Dakota, and became a Registered Nurse in 1947. Doris came to Williston during her nurse's training to work at Mercy Hospital.
While working in Williston, Doris met Lyall Lindvig (McKenzie Co). They were married March 4, 1948 in Minot and made their home on 12th St West in Williston, where they raised their four children and lifelong friendships were made by kids and adults alike. Doris & Lyall operated Northwest Vending Co. for 25 years, and Lyall also farmed in McKenzie County.
Doris was a 53-year breast cancer survivor. After diagnosis, treatment and recovery in the early 70's, she spent many years as a volunteer with Reach to Recovery, supporting recent mastectomy patients. Doris was a faithful member of First Lutheran Church in Williston. In recent conversations she said First Lutheran Church was a fun time in her life and "a good place to be".
Doris was a talented sewer, quilter and baker. Her children, grandchildren, greatgrandchildren and many friends and neighbors benefitted from these hobbies. From sewing clothes and costumes, to stitching warm quilts and spending hours in the kitchen, Doris used her talents to express her love and care for her family.
Doris came from a family that loved and made music. Her mother, Julia, was a gifted pianist, and the entire family enjoyed singing together in perfect harmony.
Doris maintained an interest in the lives all those she knew and loved. She was always curious to hear what was happening in their lives, and it was even better when they got to visit in person. She lit up each and every time a beloved family member or friend walked through her door.
Doris had many angels in her life that she relied on as she found her abilities declining. Keith and Carol Bruce were beloved neighbors in later years, with their entire family pitching in in different ways to support Doris. She was always grateful and they held a special place in her heart. Her son Curt and his wife Barb helped with gardening and painting projects. She enjoyed his fall hunting visits so she could cook and bake for him too.
Doris's daughter Jean was a constant in her life, and when she lived in Williston the two could be seen around town everywhere from concerts in the park to craft shows. And she loved going on drives when her son-in-law Scott was at the wheel.
Doris decided she was done with snowy sidewalks and weeding her flowerbeds at age 92! In Bismarck, she was lovingly cared for by her daughter Barbara and son-in-law John, son Jack and his wife Nettie; all angels here on Earth who devoted so much time and energy to ensuring she was safe and comfortable.
She will be deeply missed by her children Barbara (John) Hipp, Jack (Nettie) Lindvig, Curt (Barb) Lindvig, Jean (Scott Shackelford) Lindvig. She leaves a legacy of love through her grandchildren Adam Hipp, Jake (Kelly) Hipp, Liz (Anthony) Klein, Sarah (Garrett) Mikrut, John Lindvig, Emily (Marcell) LindvigBenson, Susanne (Regan) Kilbrei, Douglas (Emily) Carrier, Margot (Brett) Brunelle; and 12 great-grandchildren with the 12th arriving shortly after her passing to make an even dozen (a number much appreciated by a baker such as Doris). She is also survived by her beloved youngest sister Virginia Halseth (California) and many cherished nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Lyall; her parents Jack and Julia Nelson, father- and mother-in-law Gilbert and Sarah Lindvig; siblings and spouses Elise (Gene) Solomonson, Robert (Millie) Nelson, Jeanne Otterness, and Ralph (Jerrie) Nelson; sisters- and brothers-in-law Marie and Carl Westberg and Evelyn and Dale Brokaw, and several nephews and a niece.
Memorials for Doris may be given to First Lutheran Church Radio Fund, 916 Main, Williston, ND, or the National MS Society - Upper Midwest Chapter @ www.nationalmssociety.org.
The family wishes to thank staff at Edgewood, Touchmarck, Missouri Slope, CHI St Alexius Hospice and Benedictine Living Community for compassionate care of mom.
The Everson-Coughlin Funeral Home of Williston is in care of arrangements.
