Gary Nelson Obituary

Gary Dennis Nelson
October 23, 1943 - November 30, 2024
Gary Nelson, age 81, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 30, 2024, at the Wentz Living Center in Napoleon, ND. He was born on October 23, 1943, to Norman and Florence Nelson in McVille, ND.
Gary grew up in McVille and graduated from Valley City State College, where he earned his degree in Education. He began his teaching career in Fort Yates, ND, for one semester before moving to Williston, where he would dedicate 32 years to Williston Public Schools. As an English teacher, Gary touched the lives of countless students, earning their respect and admiration. His ability to connect with students and his passion for teaching left a lasting impact, with many former students sharing how much they cherished his guidance.
Beyond the classroom, Gary's entrepreneurial spirit led him and a group of fellow teachers to form "W.P.A." (We Paint Anything), a local business where they painted everything from fences to homes. Their reputation for quality work became well-known throughout the Williston area.
Gary met the love of his life, Norma Rau, at Valley City State College. They married in June of 1966 and shared a love that lasted more than 58 years. Together, they raised two children, Chad Nelson and Lisa Evans-Dykes, in Williston. Gary's family was his pride and joy, and he adored spending time with his four grandchildren: Dominic, Tristan, Dayne, and Monroe, taking them fishing, hunting, and keeping them laughing with his witty humor. Family gatherings were always full of joy, with Gary at the center, entertaining his nieces and nephews.
A man of deep faith, Gary was an active member of Life Church in Williston, where he could often be found ushering or volunteering for the church's Wild Game Men's outreach. His faith was a cornerstone of his life, and he was known for his warm, generous spirit.
Gary had a deep love for the outdoors. Whether fishing on Lake Sakakawea, hunting in the badlands, or enjoying card games with friends at Sherwin Williams, he was happiest when surrounded by nature or in the company of close friends. His sense of humor, storytelling, and infectious laugh made him the life of every gathering.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents and his twin brothers, who passed away in infancy. He is survived by his beloved wife, Norma; his children and their families; his two sisters, Sonja Lee and Myrna Hanson, and their families; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
In October 2023, Gary and Norma moved to Napoleon, ND, where they spent just over a year before his passing. Due to the family's recent move and many out-of-state relatives, a Celebration of Life service will be held in the spring of 2025 in Williston, ND. Further details will be shared as the date approaches.
Gary's legacy will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched throughout his years. His love, humor, and generosity will never be forgotten.

So many wonderful memories of Gary flood my mind! What an honor it was to be in all of his English classes. I also got to know him as a man of God, attending church and seeing him serve others and how blessed he was sharing about his family. May God hold you all in His loving arms this next chapter of your lives. He joins the many greats in Heaven. God bless you and bring you peace, love, hope, faith and joy!

Norma and family,
My condolences to you all. I never had Gary as a teacher but I did know him through WEA and hearing your stories at school. And his family was so important to him. Treasure the memories.
