He was raised and educated at many US Air Force bases and schools throughout the United States, Germany, and France. Growing up while his father was in the US Air Force, he lived all over the United States and overseas, but he always considered Minot his hometown. While in school he participated in football, soccer, baseball, wrestling, and DECA. He graduated from Minot High School in 1973.
While in high school Ted worked at Sammy's Pizza and then Sears in Minot. Later he worked at Red Owl and Miracle Mart in the meat department where he was the manager for many years. In most recent years he worked as a salesman at Quality Meats and Seafood and then Land O'Lakes/Dean Foods.

They were blessed with three daughters, Jennifer, BettyGene, and Heather and later five grandchildren. Ted was a devoted grandfather who enjoyed following his grandchildren's activities and was extremely proud of their accomplishments.
Ted was an avid hunter and fisherman. Every year he looked forward to pheasant and deer hunting season. He enjoyed many years slaying walleye at their lake home at Fish & Camp Court, Deepwater Creek Bay Lake Sakakawea. As an adult, Ted participated in basketball, softball, and bowling. He was also a superfan of the Atlanta Braves baseball team and of the Raiders football team. Throughout the last 50 years, Ted always had at least one (sometimes two or three) Springer Spaniels or yellow Labrador Retrievers at his side.
He was a member of the Pheasants for the Future and ND Game & Fish Whopper Club.
His loving family includes: wife, Patty; children, Jennifer Kaler, Minot, BettyGene (Chris) Falcon, Minot, Heather (Justin) Andre, Reidsville, NC; five grandchildren, Armoni, Avery, Tayler, London, and Foster; brother, Ron (Tracy) Kaler; aunt, Beverly Kulseth; uncle, Sam (Barb) Kaler nieces and nephews and numerous cousins, fishing and hunting buddies, and his faithful companion, Sadie.
