Maryjane Bays Obituary

Maryjane Elizabeth "Bettye" Bays, aged 89, passed away peacefully on April 30. Bettye was born in Redwood City, California, to John and Anastasia (Foley) Bromley and was an only child. She received her RN degree from College of Notre Dame in Belmont. She met her husband, Richard Bays, in San Mateo and they were married in 1948. They moved to Willits in 1968, with their four children, making it their forever home.
Bettye was raised on a farm and loved animals her whole life. She was a member of Guide Dogs for the Blind, and later taught dog obedience classes, and was a 4-H leader in Willits.
She was very active and a vital part of the Willits community, volunteering thousands of hours. Bettye, along with her father John Bromley, helped establish the Willits Senior Center in 1978, and was the first senior outreach worker. She opened a teen center and teen crisis line in 1979 and she worked actively with Red Cross. Both Bettye and Richard were active in React and the Willits Public Safety Auxiliary for many years. Bettye also established a cancer support group after battling her own cancer in 1994, and also worked as a volunteer for Hospice and Willits Daily Bread. Bettye was the recipient of many civic and community awards Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year in 1989, the Soroptomist Woman of Distinction in 1989, and was the Frontier Days Honorary Grand Marshall in 2004. Bettye and her husband were the first managers of the Willits Mini Storage.
Bettye was preceded in death by Richard in 1990 and her son Christopher in 2009. She is survived by daughters Cathy Ortiz, Bonnie Madrigal and Trish Bacci, 10 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Jesse and I send our deepest condolences to Bettye Bays' family and to the Willits community. Bettye was truly a wonderful ( and feisty) woman. We enjoyed so many memories with her out at the ranch. Her green beans and Thanksgiving turkey were the best. Bettye never failed to offer comfort and gentle advice at just the right time. She will be so greatly missed. Rest in heaven dear friend.

I can just imagine Betty and Dick just sitting on a cloud in rocking chairs watching over all their loved ones, laughing and smiling together once again. My heart and prayers are with all of you that she left behind. She was unique and I have some special memories of her in my heart, as well. We both lost a son named Christopher. Reunited for her, one day for me.

Bettye always treated me like a daughter even after Chris and I divorced. She was a wonderful spirit and will always have a place in my heart. Lots of love to Bettye and to the family.

When we moved here 30 years ago, she became my "adopted mother". I loved her so. The whole town did. She did things her own way and could not have cared less what people thought. We always got a laugh when we saw her driving that old green truck with tags that had expired YEARS before. And her ever faithful Moose in the back watching over her. Oh the stories I have in my head from nights in her sheep barn to the last sixteen years on the coast with her closest friends. That weekend will never be the same, but we find comfort and just a little humor knowing you are now with Wilma, JoMarie,, and Kitty. We love you so much and will forever!

One truly nice lady; she will be missed. I still recall her kind and gentle voice calling in the middle of the night to dispatch us with the ambulance service. She always wanted to make sure I was awake before she gave the details. Thanks Bettye for all of your generous hours donated to the town and community you loved. R.I.P. and says hi to Dick for me. It was a real pleasure knowing you and calling you a friend!
