Constance Tate Obituary

Constance Tate
October 6, 2023
Constance Anderson Tate, age 96, died at Brandywine Living at Dresher Estates, outside of Philadelphia, on October 6, 2023. She was a former resident of Wilton, CT; New York, NY; and Saranac Lake, NY. Connie, as she was known, grew up in Manhattan, attended the Brearley School, graduated from Wellesley College, and earned an MA in Education from the University of Bridgeport. In 1948 she married Robert T. Tate, Jr., a lawyer who worked for the Standard Oil Company of New Jersey, retired as Associate General Council of Exxon, and died in 1992. They divided their time between Wilton, CT, and New York City. In Wilton, they were both wardens at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church and members of the Wilton Riding Club and the Kiwanis Club of Wilton. In Manhattan, Connie was an English teacher at the Nightingale-Bamford School and the Calhoun School. Following in the footsteps of her mother and her grandmother, she was a leader in the YWCA. She served on the board of the YWCA-USA, served as chair of the YWCA World Service Council, and was chair of the board of the YWCA-NYC. She received the YWCA-NYC Woman of the Year award in 2018. She also served as president of the Brearley School Alumnae Association and on the Metropolitan Committee of the Union Theological Seminary. She was a member of the Cosmopolitan Club of New York and the Daughters of the American Revolution. Connie and her husband owned a summer house on Hoel Pond in Saranac Lake, NY. Connie served on the board of the Adirondack Council. From 2020 to 2023 she was a resident at Saranac Village at Will Rogers in Saranac Lake. She is survived by two sons, Robert and John, seven grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter. A third son, Gerald, died in 2021.
A memorial service will be held at the Church of the Ascension, Saranac Inn, NY, in August 2024.

I was friend of Gerry. We met at the YMCA. Incredible person and athlete. Never forget him or the YMCA, a result from Constance's hard work. Rest in Peace with Gerry.

To Bob Tate,
My husband Ben and I knew Connie well in Wilton. She came down to our new home at Kendal/Crosslands in Kennett Square to introduce us to friends here.
We met you when you officiated at our son Peter's memorial service (with Dale Sowers) at St Matthews in 1979.
Ben died a year ago this month.
Connie was a special human being. She did a great deal of good in her life.
