Gordon Butler Obituary
Gordon Frederick "Sonny" Butler, Jr., 87, passed away on February 22, 2025, in Wimberley, Texas.
Born on July 29, 1937, in Henryetta, Oklahoma, Gordon grew up with a strong sense of curiosity and determination. After graduating from Henryetta High School, he pursued higher education at the University of Oklahoma, earning a bachelor's degree in chemistry before continuing his studies at the University of Houston, where he obtained a master's degree in chemistry. His academic achievements laid the foundation for a lifelong career in chemical research.
While at the University of Oklahoma, he met Marlynn Hamilton from Houston. They begin dating and were married at First Presbyterian Church, Houston on September 3, 1960. They raised a family together in Houston, Corpus Christi, Wadsworth, Ohio, Clear Lake, Texas and then retired to Wimberley, Texas.
Gordon dedicated his professional life to running a chemical research lab for PPG, where he spent his entire career making meaningful contributions to the field. HIs work at PPG was marked by diligence and expertise, earning him the respect of colleagues and peers alike.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Gordon found joy in life's simple pleasures. He was an avid golfer who relished time on the course and took great pride in maintaining his yard. A devoted fan of the Oklahoma Sooners, he rarely missed an opportunity to cheer on his team, regardless of the sport. Reading was another passion that enriched his life and kept his mind engaged, particularly in the area of World War Two, the Civil War, and the search for the historical Jesus.
Above all else, Gordon cherished his family. He is survived by his children: son Gordon and his wife Susan; son Lynn and his wife Missy; and daughter Mary. His legacy continues through five grandchildren-Brandon (wife Ashley), Tara (husband Alex), Becca, Beau, and Lauren (husband David)-and six great-grandchildren: Landon, Raelyn, Kynlee, Addy, Lucy, and Tessa. Gordon was preceded in death by his beloved wife Marlynn, parents Gordon and Pauline, and sister Nancy.
A memorial service will be held on March 8, 2025, at 10:30 AM at Wimberley Presbyterian Church, located at 956 FM 2325 in Wimberley, Texas.
Gordon will be remembered as a good person who loved deeply and lived with a passion for his family. His memory will continue to bring comfort to those who knew him.
