Anne Compere Obituary

Anne McGaugh Compere

February 8, 1936 - July 1, 2024

Anne McGaugh Compere (88) of Winston Salem, NC, died peacefully on July 1, after a short stay in the Brookridge Skilled Nursing Unit. There she received loving and compassionate care by a host of medical and care-giving professionals.

Anne was born in Grenada, Mississippi on February 8, 1936 to parents Allie Lee McGaugh and Ernestine Jaudon McGaugh. She grew up in Mississippi, and graduated from Mississippi College in 1957 with a degree in Sociology. She also earned a Masters of Education in Family Relations from UNC-G in 1976.

She is survived by her three children: Layne Compere Starling, LouAnn Compere Vaughn (Scott) and William Lee Compere; four granddaughters: Padgett Lane Vaughn (Don Renaldo), Rachael Vaughn Pennell (Ben), Sydney Compere Vaughn Carter (Will), and Virginia Susan Starling; and her sister, Marty McGaugh Blackburn (Warner) and their children Scott Blackburn (Christi) and Lisa Blackburn Lundgren (David). Anne also treasured her five great grandchildren: Philip Barnett Renaldo, Thomas Wilson Renaldo, Caroline Sutton Renaldo, Copelyn Eve Sullivan and Georgia Vaughn Pennell; and three great nieces: Jessica, Kate and Shannon Blackburn.

Anne lived a life of service to others, lived life to the fullest and enriched the lives of many. She joined Knollwood Baptist Church in 1967, where she sang alto in the choir for decades, directed countless weddings, was ordained as one of Knollwood's first female deacons and received the Anne Thomas Neil Award from Baptist Women in Ministry. Her professional life included being the Executive Director of the Mental Health Association of Forsyth County, Executive Director of CONTACT, the Director of Training at Member's Credit Union, and speaking and leading workshops on marriage enrichment and communication skills.

Anne adored her family. She was a dedicated and extraordinary friend to so many, never letting go of a friendship, keeping up with folks from her childhood, high school, college, work and church life. She was also extremely hospitable. Anne hosted a revolving door of people who lived with her over the years, from medical students, to children of friends, to friends of friends. You absolutely could not impose on Anne. She was as gregarious and gracious as they come!

If Anne touched your life, please join us for a celebration of her life at Knollwood Baptist Church - 330 Knollwood Street, Winston Salem - on July 11 at 2:00 p.m. A reception will follow the service in the Fellowship Hall. Donations can be made to the Knollwood Baptist Church Music Designated Fund.

I will miss Anne. She was my trainer when I started working with the credit union in 2002. Always had a smile on her face. Precious lady. Will miss her visiting us at the credit union

I met Anne 40 years ago at a retreat in Black Mountain, a truly memorable time filled with wonderful women at a difficult time in my life. She was so open and loving. I saw her by chance through the years and we always were able to catch up. Rest in peace Anne. You brought love, understanding and joy to so many lives.

Indeed, Anne was a force of nature whose company I would have sought even if I hadn't first met her as the mother and grandmother of amazing women I'm honored to know. (Apples don't fall far from their tree.) Her intelligence and graciousness leave indelible memories I'm so grateful to have.

Anne was a gift given by God
She was an example to all who knew her. I was a member of Knollwood and got to know her there. I'm so sorry for your loss but Heaven is a wonderful place.

I was a Mental Health Assn. Volunteer for years in the music group performing at any Behavioral Health units in Winston-Salem. My fondest memory of Anne Compere was her singing "Just as I Am" in a duet with the Associate Mental Health Director Barbara Muse at Knollwood Baptist Church.

I met Anne about 45 years ago when we were working in nonprofit organizations in Winston-Salem. She was a dear, dear friend and an amazing mentor. I will always remember what she said to me, one time, all those years ago, and have shared this story with others many times. We were out for lunch one day, and were talking about all the many issues we as human beings have. I asked her a question about this, which I no longer remember, but I remember exactly what she said to me. After my question, she put her fork down and smiled at me. Then she said. Marcia...if you knew how many crazy people were out there, you´d never leave your house! A very wonderful and funny lady. A really sad loss.

I first met Anne when she made a great presentation at my WFU psychology class. Not long after that we connected again when a group of us decided to meet regularly. We did, and still do, for more than 40 years-bi-weekly for dinner until Covid, then weekly, via Zoom. I don´t believe I´ve ever met anyone more loving, generous and positive. She leaves behind an unfillable void. We love you, Anne, and we will miss you!

We both lived in NC for many year and our children enjoyed teen years with many shared experiences. Anne is much loved and will be missed. My condolences to each family member.Kathy Clark
