Barbara Dyer Obituary

Barbara Dyer passed away on September 30, 2025 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She was 88 years old.

Barbara was born in Carbondale, West Virginia to Cloteal Gilfilen and John Mitchell Hastings. She grew up in nearby Montgomery, West Virginia where she graduated from Montgomery High School and West Virginia Institute of Technology. While attending Tech, Barbara met fellow student Ronald Glen Dyer of Cumberland, Maryland. They were married on August 2, 1958 and enjoyed a long and happy marriage.

Barbara and Ron moved first to Indianapolis, Indiana where Ron began his long and successful career at R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. Barbara was always Ron's cheerleader and biggest supporter. She guided her family through moves to Evansville, Detroit, Chicago, San Diego, Mexico City, Dallas, Birmingham and Winston-Salem. She effortlessly made everyplace immediately seem like home.

Gracious, beautiful and always smiling, she cared for her family, making everything a grand adventure. Barbara was actively involved with her family and community. She lead Brownie and Girl Scout troops and Girl Guides of Mexico troops. She volunteered at hospitals in all cities. She started a successful business, "A Different Drummer" in Birmingham. Barbara also spent many years as a Meals on Wheels driver in Winston-Salem.

Barbara and Ron lived in Bermuda Run for over 40 years where they enjoyed many wonderful friendships. Golf was a passion for both of them. Barbara was happiest spending time at their home at Caswell Beach. She loved the beach and enjoyed entertaining family and friends, especially her grandchildren at "Dyer Necessity".

Barbara was preceded in death by her beloved husband Ron as well as her parents and her sister Deanie Vickers.

Barbara is survived by her two daughters, Ronda Armstrong (Frank) and DeeDee Whitt. She is also survived by her three grandchildren, Mary Coleman (Christopher), Dyer Whitt (Aubra) and Clayton Whitt (Ali) as well as three great-grandchildren, George, Blaire and Frederick Coleman.

There will be a Celebration of Life service for both Barbara and Ron on November 7, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel in Advance, North Carolina.

My deepest sympathies go out to the entire Dyer and Armstrong families. I have very fond memories of both of these wonderful soles and families and all of you are in my families thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Yesterday

Two of my favorite RJR Work-friends were Barbara and Ron Dyer. Their daughter, Rhonda, used to babysit for my children, now in their 50s.
Rest in peace Barb and Ron.
