Brooks Haworth Obituary

Brooks Harper Haworth

Mar 21, 1940 - Feb 2, 2026

It is with great regret and at the same time comfort, that we inform all who loved and cared for him, that Brooks Haworth, an authentic and original gentleman of the Triad, a man abounding in adventure, culture, loyalty, wit, charm and style passed away with loved ones by his side at Cone Hospital, Monday February 2nd, following a 6 month battle with Leukemia. Brooks was born on March 21, 1940, at Baptist Hospital, to Elvin Haworth and Mildred "Mickey" Conrad Haworth.

Brooks is survived by his loving wife, Gail C. Haworth of Greensboro, Siblings; Diane Massey of Friends Homes and Mark Haworth of Valdosta, GA. Children; Stephanie Culbertson McDaniel (Neal) of Gibsonville, James A. Culbertson III (Karen) of Palm Coast, FL, Grandchildren Kennedy Culbertson and Anna McDaniel, whom lovingly referred to him as their Poppi.

Brooks is preceded in death by his parents Elvin and Mildred Haworth, his brother Herman Haworth, and his son, Brooks Harper Haworth II.

Throughout his life, Brooks benefited deeply from both the spiritual values of the Moravian practices of his mother Mickey, as well as the Quaker traditions of his Father Elvin. After graduating Reynolds High School in 1958, Brooks went on to complete a degree in History as a Fighting Quaker graduating Guilford College in 1962, lettering in Golf, Basketball and Tennis. Brooks then answered the call to serve his country and completed basic training with the United States Marine Corps at Parris Island in 1963. In 2010, Brooks was inducted into the Guilford College Athletics Hall of Fame for basketball and tennis. A feat that he was incredibly proud of with his family and friends that were present to celebrate by his side.

Brooks began his working life as a newspaper delivery boy for the Winston-Salem Journal. Following his military training, he built a long and successful career in sales, beginning in 1963 with Ford and International Trucks of Greensboro. He later worked with Mack Trucks before concluding his professional career with Volvo Trucks Global, from which he retired in 2002–2003.

Deeply engaged in his community, Brooks generously volunteered his time with the Guilford College Alumni Association, the Summit Rotary Club, Greensboro Sports Council, Greensboro Aquatic Center, and Bryan Park. With the help of many community leaders, a significant contribution for Gail and Brooks is their unwavering support in

forming The Servant Center, an organization committed to providing services and refuge to the veteran communities experiencing trauma and homelessness. In honor of their efforts, the naming of The Haworth House was a significant and proud moment for both he and Gail for their vision and dedication.

Whether you knew Brooks as a friend, husband, peer, dad, youth leader, Poppi, sports enthusiast, tennis partner, foursome on the golf course, a lucky member of The Bridge Club, adventure travel partner, or part of the many adventures that he was always busy creating, you were certainly Blessed! This "Rolling Stone" of ours, will never gather moss. We feel certain that he has already lined up a mean game of horse in Heaven.

Brooks will be remembered for his vivacious steady presence, dedication to family, pride in his work, and lifelong commitment to service and activism. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the community he helped strengthen.

A service to celebrate his life is scheduled for February 13th, 2026 at 11 a.m. at First Moravian Church in Greensboro. The family will receive friends afterward in the Old Fellowship Hall at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: First Moravian Church, 304 S. Elam Ave. Greensboro, NC 27403, Guilford College c/o Guilford College Gift Processing Center, PO Box 6381 Hermitage, PA 16148 (Guilford College's Loyalty Fund), The Servant Center, 1417 Glenwood Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27403

The family would like to thank his amazing village of friends (from all walks of life) who offered great support over the last 7 months. They would also like to thank Forbis and Dick Funeral Services and First Moravian Church for their wonderful care.

My late husband and I both knew Brooks through RJR high school and our reunions. I never saw Brooks without a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eyes. He was the most upbeat positive guy I've ever known. I send Gail and the family my happy thoughts of Brooks as they adjust to life without him.

My brothers and I grew knowing and thinking the world of Brooks. We all knew him at Ardmore, playing at Miller Park, Reynolds HS and me at Guilford.
My two older brothers welcomed Brooks into Heaven along with so many of our childhood friends.
My thoughts and prayers are with Brooks family now and in the days to come.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I loved seeing Brooks at the UNCG basketball games. He was always giving me a hard time at the UNCG basketball games (I was security lady on the floor. He was playing around with me). I always looked forward to seeing him and Gail. He was an awesome guy and will be greatly missed. God Bless all the family

I remember Brooks as a young man when our families both attended Ardmore Moravian Church in Winston Salem. His family was very special to my family, the Denny's, as were their children. Prayers for his family as they celebrate his life.

Brooks was such a huge part of my childhood- as he and Gail were close friends of my parents, Tom and Nicka Thornton. Brooks always made me feel seen and special as a young girl- and it made a huge impact on me. As my parents have been passed for 14 years, he emailed me every year on my birthday with well wishes. What an incredibly thoughtful and loving man- thinking of OTHERS and their well-being before his own. Thinking of Gail and Stephanie and Jamie..and his grandkids for their enormous loss...

I was so sorry to see that Brooks died. He was a great friend and I thoroughly enjoyed the years I worked with him at Guilford College. Even after he retired, he would still remember my birthday with an email or a call. - Gertrude Beal
