Carl Farrington Obituary

My Hero - Carl Bruce Farrington Jr. was born a poor child on Feb. 6, 1954, in Hohenwald, Tenn., to C. Bruce Farrington and Annie Ruth Rodgers Farrington Noble. He unexpectedly left this life late in the evening on Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2003, in the arms of his wife of 30 years. Bruce found rhythm in 1970, then graduated from Toledo Libbey High School in 1972. In 1973, Bruce discovered his "special purpose" when he married his love, Cheryl. He relished his lifelong memberships to the Crazy 8's and the Dallas Cowboys Fan Club. He graduated from Concord College in 1976, the first of his family to do so. His collection of World War II memorabilia, electric football games and "poor man's stock" is in Saigon, damn, still in Saigon. Bruce enjoyed his employment in siding and guttering, taco making, teaching, environmental analysis, human resources management and as a certified compensation professional. As of late he had indulged his artistic ability in home economics, aka, "house husband." Although he was thoroughly excited to find his name in the phone book he took even greater pride in caring for his family and putting others before himself. Bruce was an inspiring actor, writer, storyteller, comedian and all-around good guy. He has left an invaluable wealth of love, memories and wisdom for all who made his acquaintance to cherish. Now, all he needs is his remote control, and this baby outfit ... this remote control, this baby outfit, ooh, ooh and all his Chuck Taylors ... yeah, and this thermos! Bruce is survived by his devoted wife, Cheryl; his loving daughters, Niki Farrington and Lori Farrington and her husband Neil Johnson; and their pretty-pretty granddaughter, Maci Ann Farrington-Johnson. His immediate family includes William Farrington, Chrystal Noble, James Noble, Steven and Traci Farrington, David MacIntosh, Ethel Farrington, Jeff and Diane Smith, Becky Smith, Cathy Smith, Ruth and Ed Honaker, Ricky and Shirley Waddel, Sandy Waddel, Ruby and Lee Wyman, Loretta Westfall, Bill Halley, Linda Halliday and Larry and Kathy Westfall. Bruce adored his nephews and nieces, Chad and Nathan Westfall, Jackie, Dianna and Jimmy Johnston, Heather Farrington, Ashley, Sasha and Kleisha Noble, Haley and Ben Farrington, Betty, Jason and Garret Mac-Intosh, David and Joey Mashburn, Tony and Eddie Honaker, Stephanie and John Manns and Bobby Walcutt. Bruce loved his family, his friends, his life and living. Please join his family and friends to celebrate Bruce's life at 11 a.m. today, Dec. 13, at Vog-ler's Reynolda Road Chapel. Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army, 836 Oak St., Suite 310, Winston-Salem, NC 27102.

Bruce was my friend from way back in the DOT, West Virgina. We worked together, laughed together, trout fished in August in the middle of a drought. We had more brew in the car than there was water in the streams (no trout were in danger that weekend). I recall a challenge tennis match where the most memorable image and outcome was Bruce arriving wearing cutoffs, his traditional black high tops, and proceeded to smoke cirgarettes on court as he hacked at the tennis ball. He won the bet. ugh. That was the Bruce I shall remember along with his amazing stories like goat stew at Farrington Lake, TN over each 4th of July. I now understand that the goat stew may not be all that. But what a powerful image of roasted goat stewing by the lake as dusk announces the end of another day. Yum, yum. He sometimes thought he was Elvis and could perform a credible likeness on occassion. He brightened many of my days. I shall miss him. The obituary was so very much Bruce and it was my honor to attend his final service. He would have approved. My deepest sympathy goes to Cheryl, Niki, Lori and the rest of Bruce's family.

Dear Farrington Family,

I worked with Bruce and always enjoyed his many humorous stories from his life experiences. Bruce would always laugh harder than anyone else. I always knew that he was a person who enjoyed life and would have a great story to tell afterwards. What a loss. Please accept my deepest sympathy.

Mrs. Farrington,

I was so sorry to hear of the loss of your beloved Bruce. I have heard you speak of him often at work and know he was very near and dear to your heart. Even though I never met him, he sounds like an awsome guy, husband, and father. Just know I love you and I pray that the Lord will fill the void you feel and know you are never alone.

My condolences to the family.

Cheryl,

I am so sorry about your loss. I'm sorry I could not attend any of the services, I had the Flu last week. Bruce was such a nice person, he was always very friendly and had a smile or funny story to share. May God be with you and your daughters during this difficult time; your family has suffered so much loss in recent months. God Bless You,

Bruce Farrington will truly be missed by his family, the City of Winston-Salem Human Resources and Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools Human Resources. Bruce touched lives in all those places in a special way. Bruce had a gift for making people smile no matter the situation and he always looked for the bright side in every endeavor. Even though Bruce had a very poor background as a child, he was rich in so many other ways. Bruce was an inspriration to all who had the pleasure of knowing him and I consider it an honor to have known him as a co-worker and friend. His laughter will be a lasting memory that I will not soon forget.

"It's not where you come from but where you're going"--to me, Bruce was the shining example of those words of wisdom and always will be. We shared a room at Highways (he inhaled his lunch, played along with my word games and expounded on his interpretation of Revelations, all with that great smile). That led to our office bowling team, watching him sail that 8-iron 205 yards over the creek to the 4th green at Sandy Brae, a 40-year-old's first visit to the Lyric (with a wide-eyed 21-year-old secretary), first meeting his always-fun Cheryl on a trip to the Galaxy 2000, visits to Bill's Creek Road and the satellite dish business and, most of all, to a friendship I will always treasure--with regrets that I didn't stop on my way through Winston-Salem. His time among us was much too short and those of us whose lives he touched will miss him.

I thoroughly enjoyed working with Bruce. He always had a smile, laugh, joke or story to tell that filled the department with such cheerfulness. I never heard him put anybody down or say anything to hurt someone's feelings. It's like I still hear his jolly laugh when I think about him. Be encouraged in knowing you had such a blessing in your life. My prayers are with you all.

I had the privilege of working with Bruce. I will miss him. He was so much fun and just a great guy. I know he will be greatly missed by his family and friends. I wish that his granddaughter could have him in her life as she grows up.
