Charles Baity Obituary

Baity, Charles Lee "Bud"

March 22, 1929 - December 24, 2020

Yadkinville – Charles Lee "Bud" Baity, 91, went racing on December 24, 2020. He passed at Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson from complications with lung disease. He was born to Clyde Newsome "C.N." Baity and Carrie Lee Goins Baity on March 22, 1929. He was a member of Courtney Baptist Church where he attended and supported the church in many ways. Bud also was a member of Harmon Masonic Lodge #420. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his devoted and loving wife, Nell Spillman Baity. They married on Thanksgiving Day November 25, 1954. They built together a loving marriage, family, and business until her death on September 16, 2011. He was preceded in death by his two brothers, Clyde Edward Baity and Clarence Issac Wesley Baity. Left to cherish him and the many interests, accomplishments, and racing history are his children, Christinia Lee Baity (Rodney) Casstevens and Charles Bryan (Nikki) Baity; two grandsons and a step-grandson, Charles Michael (Danielle) Baity, Turner Bryan (Ashley) Baity and Kirk Lee (Sarah) Casstevens. He also leaves the Princess of our family Mia May Baity his great-granddaughter. Also left to love and cherish the impact he made in their lives are a sister, Constance "Connie" Dickens; brother-in-law, Lester (Betty) Spillman; several loving cousins, nieces, and nephews. He also made many friends across the country with his passion for Indy and the USAC racing series. He would drive to one of these races, especially open-wheel dirt racing to see the race and turn around after seeing it and drive home. In 1955 he along with his uncle W.G. "Buck" Baity moved Baity's Tire Service into the building still standing on 601 in Courtney. The company is still in business today, over 60 years of dedication through his family. His funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, January 2, 2021 at Courtney Baptist Church by the Rev. James Williams and the Rev. Jimmy Lancaster. Burial will follow in church cemetery. Bud will lie in-state from 8:00 to 4:00 PM Thursday, December 31, 2020 and Friday, January 1, 2021 at Gentry Family Funeral Service in Yadkinville. Memorials can be made to the Donor's choice. Like a father to me in so many ways, over so many years. He treated me like his own, and has been a wonderful grandfather to my sons and granddaughter. He leaves a legacy of love through them, and his children, to cherish his memory.

Bud, If they hadn't put your hands in your pockets, you'd have caught another day. Gonna miss knowing you're around, but now you can tell Nell that the weeds don't need pulling. I'm still looking for that stud-stretcher that you sent me after when a lug stud broke back in the early '80s. Thanks for the shirt when you helped Daddy back in the early '50s, and thanks for letting me scour the slab out back for used tires while giving me a teen job..... another shirt. While I appreciated your ability to come to Mama's 80th birthday party, I can appreciate even more what your presence in Heaven must be. Next time I see you, please don't get my coffee cup mixed up with your 'bakker spitting cup. Thanks for the leadership and the friendship. My most sincere condolences to your family. Just wanted you and Nell to read this together, now that you can. Keep sweeping in a straight line, 'ol man! See you down the road.....

My entire family was deeply saddened to hear of Bud's passing. He has been a friend of our family for many years above and beyond our relationship as the place we all went to get tires when we needed them. Every time any of us would run into Bud either at the shop or out somewhere, he always talked about the trips to Daytona, Atlanta, he and my Dad, Bobby St. John, had taken together because they were both such big race fans. When my Dad died fairly suddenly in 1998, Bud made a gift donation towards my Dad's funeral which helped my family out tremendously because my Dad was on disability and had no burial or life insurance of any kind, and Bud knew our family's financial situation so Bud being the kind of man he was, kind, caring, generous, and giving made a gift donation to Gentry Funeral Home toward my Dad's funeral costs. My family was so very grateful. It was such an incredible selfless and beautiful thing to do for our family, but also showed the kind of relationship he and my Dad had for many years, both in a business capacity and in a very personal, friendship they cultivated for many years. I am sure Bud had so many wonderful friends as well as family who was waiting by the "Pearly Gates" as he made his way inside. He will be missed dearly. My entire family sends their love to the remaining members of the family, and we pray God will comfort you and give you peace as you traverse this great loss in your family. Bud Baity was an incredible man and he will be missed greatly. Please accept my condolences for the loss of this wonderful man who was so good to me and my family while he was with us. May he rest in eternal peace with God. Our family will keep you in our thoughts and prayers as your family contends with this incredible loss. We are so very sorry. The Bobby St. John Family

Bud was a great friend to the Spencer family! We loved hearing his stories of the different race tracks he had been to and the many drivers turned into family he made along his way. Bud became a great friend and family member to me. He always talked of his wife whom he loved and missed. I’m sure it was a great reunion! We loved talking about all different race tracks. Our favorite was the Four Crown where we met and would meet there, year after year, after that. Bud my friend you will be greatly missed!!. Josh Spencer 66j

I fondly remember going to races with Bud and my dad. Both were so thrilled when Lee and I sat in the infield and “scored” the race car. (Long before electronics, and a person actually documented the time in seconds coming around the track). We were young and really thought nothing about it, but our dads were so proud.
Together now, racing in glory!!!!
Bud was always the loudest, the funniest, and the most accommodating. Always made sure we were taken care of.
Thinking of the good times today, and praying for your peace and comfort Lee, Bryan, and family.

I knew Bud from the races. He came out of the stands one night and put a full set of tires on our midget. For the last 15 years I think we became a bigger fan of Bud and his love of racing. He always found us racing around the country and came to give us his thoughts on how to go faster. We look forward to hearing his stories again someday. We will miss him dearly. The Chili Bowl in January will never be the same with out Bud.
