Charles McSwain Obituary

McSWAIN WINSTON-SALEM Mr. Charles "Charlie" Ryan McSwain died Wednesday, April 7, 2010. Charlie was born on September 15, 1920 to Robert and Mamie McSwain in Salisbury, NC. He served as Chief Yeomen in the United States Navy on the U.S.S. Thuban and Bolivor in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Charlie served as office manager and accountant for Lingle Bakery for twenty-five years and as accountant for Andrews Automotive for thirty-two years. He was active with First Presbyterian Church for over fifty years. He regularly cooked breakfast for The Men of the Church. In addition, Charlie was an avid golfer and cook. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Bob; and sister, Frances. Surviving are his wife, Betty Newton McSwain; a son, Greg and his wife, Sandra; and grandson, Evan, of Houston, Texas. Charlie is also survived by nephews: Bill and wife, Mary Flintom of Fredericksburg, Texas, Bob and wife, Brenda Flintom of Inman, South Carolina, Blair Flintom of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania; and a niece, Betty and her husband, Sonny Butler of High Point. A Memorial Service will take place on Tuesday, April 13, at 2 p.m. in the sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church, 300 North Cherry Street, Winston-Salem. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice. Salem Funeral Home is assisting the McSwain family. Online condolences may be made through www.salemfh.com.
