Cristina Yu Obituary

YU WINSTON-SALEM ~ Cristina Yu Jan. 16, 1959 ~ Nov. 3, 2011 Cristina Yu, 52, died November 3, 2011 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born January 16, 1959, in Taiwan. Cristina met her husband, Wei-chin Lee, while they were studying at the University of Oregon. They moved to Winston-Salem in 1987 and raised two wonderful daughters, Rae-yao, a freshman at Wake Forest University, and Rae-ling, a junior at Reagan High School. Cristina earned Master degrees in Instructional Technology and Library Science, and worked as a librarian at the Z. Smith Reynolds Library for 22 years. She was active on and off campus, and was instrumental in organizing the annual Chinese New Year Festival since 2000 at Wake Forest University and many other cultural events meant to build bridges across ethnically or socio-economically diverse groups. Cristina will be remembered for her devotion to family and friends, her enormous appetite for life, and her passion for ABBA, The Carpenters, and The Sound of Music. She lived in a way that inspired us all to live a full life, and died with integrity, dignity, and grace. In addition to her husband and children, she is survived by her mother, Chao-ching Huang; two sisters, Chin-hsin Yu and Chin-ling Yu; and one brother, James Chih-ta Yu. All of them live in Taiwan. Her life will be celebrated at 1 p.m., on Wednesday, November 9, at Brendle Recital Hall on the campus of Wake Forest University, followed by a reception.

I knew Cristina my freshman year working at the ZSR. She was perhaps the most nicest individual working at the library. Always kind, encouraging, and willing to look for library materials even if it meant checking the materials in the most random places. My deepest sympathies go for Prof. Lee and his family. She will be greatly missed, but I know she is at a better place.

As a parent of daughters adopted from China in the late 90's, I greatly appreciated all Cristina did to establish and support WFU's annual Chinese New Year festival. This has been a wonderful bridge between the Chinese and non-Chinese community, as Cristina herself was. Thank you ...

My deepest sympathies Wei-Chin to you and your daughters for the tragic loss of such a wonderful woman. I have such fond memories of her at the Chinese festival with my (then) young children in 2000 and years after, as well as at the ILL office where she always willingly helped me find some obscure medical articles from the 19th century. In all capacities, she was always smiling and energetic, a truly remarkable woman. Wake will not be the same without her.
