David Carr Obituary

Carr, David K.

December 5, 1952 - April 15, 2023

David Kelso Carr, 70, of Lewisville, N.C., passed away at home surrounded by family on Saturday, April 15, 2023. David was born December 5, 1952 in Reading, Pa., to Robert and Patricia Carr. At age two, his family moved to Winston-Salem, which he considered his home.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his first wife, Kathryn "Kay" Huffine Carr - mother to Robby and Katie; second wife Lucy Miller Carr - mother to Annie; and his step-son Ian Overton.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife Rita, brother and best friend Wayne Carr (Debbie), son Robby Carr (Ashley), daughter Katie Church (Jason), daughter Annie Carr Kozloff (Alex), stepdaughter Reagan Hege, niece Elizabeth Carr Heafner (Luke), seven grandchildren, and another on the way, as well as many lifelong friends from childhood.

Growing up, David loved playing sports with his brother and friends, excelling in baseball, football, and golf. He graduated from R. J. Reynolds High School in 1971, and then served in the U.S. Navy on a submarine. After the Navy, he worked a few years as a golf pro at Grandview, Pinebrook, and Tanglewood country clubs. When he was 16 he worked in the summers for Erskine Pope at RB Deal Construction, which started a lifelong love for working in the industry. He earned his general contractors license and formed several of his own construction companies, including RKA Construction and Carr Building Company. He was proud of the countless residential, commercial, and multi-family projects that he built over his 50+ year career.

There wasn't a more devoted father and his motto being "just show up," he was always there for his children and later grandchildren. He was truly their biggest fan.

He had a passion for music and his love grew as his son Robby excelled at guitar and began to play locally. He always enjoyed concerts and music festivals that his family could go to, and looked forward to going to Merlefest every year. His favorite time of year was when Appalachian State Football season started, and he rarely missed a home game.

His family and friends will always remember the iconic personality he was blessed with. He loved to make people laugh, but most importantly he always made people feel welcome. He was kind and generous, and never hesitated to help anyone in need.

The family will meet with friends for a visitation 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 25, 2023 at Salem Funeral Home downtown location.

A Funeral Service celebrating David's life will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 26, 2023 at the Salem Funeral Home downtown Chapel.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to The Shepherd's Center, 1700 Elbert Street, Winston Salem, 27103; and/or Trellis Supportive Care, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103
