Donald Sanford Obituary

Sanford, Donald Edward

April 5, 1945 - January 31, 2022

Donald Edward Sanford, age 76, passed away on January 31, 2022 at Novant Forsyth Medical Center.

Don was born in Charlotte on April 5, 1945. He graduated from Myers Park High School, where he played football and ran track. He attended the University of North Carolina prior to joining the Navy, where he served two tours and three campaigns in Vietnam. After his discharge, he finished his degree at UNC Charlotte in 1971. Don worked in the insurance industry for over 30 years.

Don was married for 52 years to Beverly Shaw Sanford. He is survived by Bev, his son Zachary and his wife Meghan and daughter, Faith and his son Alex and wife Heather and grandsons Jacob and Carson. His daughter Courtney preceded him in death, along with his parents, Bill and Lucille Sanford.

Don is also survived by his brother Bill and wife Beverly and sister Ellen and husband Marcel along with many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held to celebrate Don on Sunday, February 6, 2022 at 3:00 pm at Clemmons Presbyterian Church. A reception will be held immediately following the service. Masking and social distancing will be observed. Don loved his best friend/wife and his children and grandchildren, his home, his extended family, beach music, and his private conversations with God. We will miss his great laugh and his love for us all. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions in his memory to Clemmons Presbyterian Church, the Vietnam Memorial Foundation or the charity of one's choice.

I had the pleasure of meeting Don and Bev through their daughter Courtney. Courtney and I met in high school and I spent many nights at the Sanford's. Don and Bev were always so much fun to be around and joke with. Don could be quiet one minute then have you in hysterical laughter the next. I know he is enjoying being reunited with Courtney and looking down on his family with love. My sincerest condolences to Bev and all of the family, my prayers and thoughts are with you all.
