Doris Conaway Obituary

Conaway, Doris Sullivan

May 18, 1935 - March 24, 2024

WALNUT COVE.

Doris Sullivan Conaway, 88, passed away Sunday morning, March 24, 2024, at her home.

Doris was born on May 18, 1935, in Stokes County to the late Frank and Edith Simmons Sullivan. She retired from R.J. Reynolds to take on babysitting for her four grandchildren. Doris was a devoted member of Fulp Moravian Church and took on many roles within the church. One of her favorite roles was being able to spend time in the nursery.

Known as strong-willed and tenacious, she was a woman of her own way and was not afraid to let one know her thoughts (especially her family). She enjoyed cooking and baking up until her health no longer allowed. When her family stepped in to help, she held nothing back, sitting at her kitchen table, giving detailed directions and was quick to correct them when it was not suitable, especially when making her biscuits. Even up until her death, she put up a good fight. She was loving and had a servant heart but did not like it when the shoe was on the other foot. She did not want the pomp and circumstances focused on her. She would quickly shy away from the light if it were shone on her.

In addition to her parents, Doris was preceded in death by her husband, James William Conaway; son, James Dale Conaway; two brothers, Ronnie Sullivan and Donald Sullivan; and her sisters, Pat Mounce and Sylvia Marsh.

She is survived by her two children, Barry Conaway (Sharon) and Ronda Conaway; four grandchildren, Ashley Conaway (William), Casey Stultz (Matthew), Zach Conaway (Sarah), and Nick Conaway (Brittany); great-grandchildren, Wyatt, Walker, Wylder, Gabe, Norah, Caroline, and Madison; and many other nieces and nephews.

There will be a 3:30 p.m. graveside service held on Thursday, March 28, 2024, at Westminister Gardens, Greensboro with Pastor Chuck Harmon and Mr. Scotty Mounce officiating.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, March 28, 2024, from 1 to 2 p.m. at Fulp Moravian Church and other times at her home.

Memorials may be made to Fulp Moravian Church: 1556 US HWY 311 S, Walnut Cove, NC 27052.
