Douglas Colvard Obituary

COLVARD ELKIN - Douglas "Wayne" Colvard, Jr., age 26 of Blue Ridge Avenue, passed away Sunday, February 8, 2009 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Mr. Colvard was born December 4, 1982 in Surry County to Douglas Wayne & Tammy Holbrook Colvard. Mr. Colvard was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and was employed at the Statesville Post Office. He was a member of the Yadkin VFW and was in the North Carolina Army National Guard where he had completed two tours of duty in Iraq from 2004-2005 and 2005-2006. During his 7 years military service, he earned an Army Commendation Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, Army Reserve Components Achievement, medal with one oak leaf cluster, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with M Device and numeral 2, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Non-Commissioned Officers Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, with numeral 2, North Carolina National Guard State Active Duty Award, North Carolina National Guard Service Award and a Combat Action Badge. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, David "Sonny" Holbrook, Jr.; paternal great grandmother, Jessie Colvard; paternal great grandparents, Samantha & Claude Smith; maternal great grandparents, David & Ruby Holbrook, Bob & Mattie Wishon. Survivors include: Father and Mother, Doug & Tammy Colvard of Elkin; a sister, Heather Colvard of Elkin; paternal grandparents, Bobby & Irene Colvard of Elkin; maternal grandmother, Lucille Holbrook of Hamptonville; paternal great grandfather, Ralph Colvard of Jonesville; special dear friend, Erin Martin of Elkin; several aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Funeral services will be Thursday, February 12, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Danny Dodds, Rev. Justin Bauguess and Dr. Gus Thomas officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with full military honors. Mr. Colvard will lie instate 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to Yadkin VFW post 10346, 2712 Sloan' s Mill Road, Hamptonville, NC 27020. We will miss you very much and will always love you. Keep a look out for all of your family one day to be with you in heaven. Doug, Tammy, Heather, Aunt Irene, and Uncle Bobby we will see him again one day. I know it is hard but the good Lord wanted him home now. We don't know why.
