Edward Garner Obituary

GARNER SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - With profound sadness we the brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends of Edward Lee Garner announce his passing on Thursday, Dec. 27, 2007. A resident of San Bernardino for the past 30 years, Ed retired as associate director of Mental Health Services for San Bernardino County. He was born in Winston-Salem, N.C., on June 11, 1943. Upon graduating from Atkins High School class of 1961, he entered N.C. A&T University where he matriculated for one year before entering the U.S. Air Force. He proudly served his country during the Cold War years in Germany and upon completion of duty moved to Los Angeles. There he entered the University of California where he received the B.S. degree. He did further study at the University of Nebraska receiving the M.S.W. and Ph.D. degrees. Later he also completed the Doctor of Psychology degree at the University of California. Dr. Garner spent his entire career working as an advocate for the mentally ill homeless population. He authored several articles on the plight of our country' s growing problems of the homeless who are mentally ill and became a pioneer, starting homeless shelters throughout the San Bernardino area. He was predeceased by his parents, Andrew and Dorothy Garner McIntire; and two brothers, Clarence and James. He is survived by three brothers, Charles McIntire of Trenton, N.J.; Michael (Yvette) McIntire of Philadelphia, Pa.; and Rickey (Jennie) McIntire of Fayetteville, N.C.; two sisters, Deborah McIntire Chaney and Rosa (Hiram) Caldwell of Winston-Salem; a sister-in-law, Portia F. McIntire of Walkertown; and also his beloved nieces and nephews whom he supported while encouraging their academic endeavors. Friends and family are welcome to attend a service of remembrance to be held at noon Saturday, Feb. 2, at Historic Lloyd Presbyterian Church, Chestnut Street, Winston-Salem.
