Elizabeth Freeman Obituary

GREENSBORO - Elizabeth Freeman died Saturday, April 30, 2005, at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital. Miss Freeman was born May 2, 1918, in Culpepper, Va., to Robert A. and Bessie Willis Freeman. She grew up in Dobson and graduated from Dobson High School. After attending Queens College in Charlotte and Parsons School of Design in New York, she worked in New York and Richmond, Va. She then came to Greensboro where she worked with Otto Zenke. For the next 35 years, she helped Mr. Zenke define his classic English style of interior design. As their business grew rapidly, Miss Freeman became her own master of his style. Able to recognize period furniture, porcelain and paintings and to place them tastefully in her clients' homes, she was highly esteemed among those with whom she worked. Her eccentric nature and long red hair, along with her endless energy, made her much sought-after as an interior designer. Following Mr. Zenke's death in 1983, she assumed her own business on Eugene Court in Greensboro, where she continued to work seven days a week. To the very end, she was traveling to the homes of her faithful clients from Boston to Palm Beach, as well as making buying trips to New York and England. Her knowledge of English history and furniture, plus her impeccable style, will continue to be her reputation. Miss Freeman was predeceased by her brother, Robert A. Freeman Jr.; and her sister, Mary M. Freeman. Surviving are her sister, Frances F. May; and her nephews and nieces, Robert A. Freeman III, William H. Freeman, Mary M. Angelil, Philip F. May and Anita M. Krull. In addition, she is survived by two special friends, Robin Mack Davis and Andy Alexeew. A memorial service will be conducted at 4 p.m. today, May 1, at Forbis and Dick Guilford Chapel. The family wishes to give special thanks to Hospice at Moses Cone Hospital for their kind and loving care. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Greensboro, 2500 Summit Ave., Greensboro, NC 27405. The family is being served by Forbis and Dick North Elm Chapel.
