Ellen White Obituary
White, Ellen Leaverton
July 22, 1937 - November 15, 2021
Ellen Leaverton White, 84, passed away peacefully on November 15, 2021 in Vero Beach, Florida with family by her side.
Ellen would want to be remembered foremost as a loving and supportive mother. Her enduring legacy will be her devotion to faith, education, justice, compassion, music, gardening, creativity, and family.
She was a proud Texan with a special affinity for the Blue Ridge Mountains and North Carolina. After completing her degree in Sociology with honors at Salem College, Ellen worked tirelessly throughout her life advocating for juvenile justice, interfaith relationships, and equality. Her deep Christian faith was her touchstone and strongest guiding principle. As an elder in the Presbyterian Church USA and in numerous leadership positions in churches and judicatories around the country, she lived her faith and helped foster environments for fellowship and worship.
Ellen loved music, the arts, games, and travel. Her beautiful soprano voice rang out joyously during worship, at celebrations, and with her family. She was a gifted seamstress, creating countless designs for children's theater ensembles. A competitive bridge and card player, she relished the camaraderie of a fierce competition among friends or family. Stories of her travels and the people she encountered inspired the adventurer in us all. Through all that she loved and shared with others, she will be remembered as a loving and devoted friend.
Ellen is survived by her daughters, Allison White Matsik (George); Shannon White (Virgil Roberson); Heather White (Patrick Gathings); Courtney White; grandchildren, Garrett Montgomery and Peyton White; step-grandchildren, Brad Matsik (Kristen) and Lucy Stribley (Todd) and their families; as well as her dear cousin, Sue Kidwell. Extended family and friends will miss her tenderness and loyalty.
The family invites all who knew and loved her to a joyful celebration of Ellen's life on Sunday, April 3, 2022 at 2:00 P.M. at First Presbyterian Church, 520 Royal Palm Blvd, Vero Beach, Florida. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor Ellen by planting a garden, sending a letter to someone who needs to hear from you, saying a prayer, or singing a joyful song.
