long, long ago during a blinding snowstorm our buses stood idling in the road up to appalachin ski mountain. as i watched a few people get off the bus and head up the road, i decided i'd walk ahead and wait for the buses to catch up. WRONG. we made it up to the ski area and were told the buses had turned around to go back to charlotte. well, that was fine for the 'adults' who had money for a hotel room, but what did i know, i was a senior in high school. somehow, as appalachin was shutting down early due to the 'inclimate' weather, word got out there was a damsel in distress. the next thing i know i was informed that i'd be the guest of the director of operations and his wife in their lovely home (of course after they'd called my parents).
well, it may not have been the first 'big adventures' of my young life, but without a doubt it was the best fun i've ever had. elmer and norma's kids made me feel like i fit right into their family and what a boisterous bunch they were. all of them, not just the kids. nice, nice, nice good people, a happy, loving family i've never forgotten. and i've told the tale many times. it may have been a blinding, freezing 'blizzard' that night up on the mountain, all i know is the kind, caring way i was taken in by their entire family warmed me down to my toes.
miz jenkins you and mr jenkins were such great 'hosts' to me that weekend. i came away remembering what a fun family you had and what great parents you were because all of your kids were genuinely nice. learning by example, i believe they call it.
i rarely read the paper, but i'm glad i did today. i'm so sorry for your loss today, but there'll come a time, again you'll all see that smile again, coming around the corner. please thank your kids for being so nice to me and you kids take good care of your momma.
