Eugene Walch Obituary

Eugene "Artie" Arthur Walch

July 21, 1955 - June 28, 2025

Artie passed away at his home on Saturday June 28th at the age of 69. Born in Hickory, North Carolina, Artie moved to Winston Salem in his youth and settled in Germanton, NC with his wife, where they later welcomed two children. Artie was a carpenter by trade, which was simply an avenue for his personal brand of creativity. He preferred rehabbing historic homes and landmarks. He loved a good scrap of wood or old door hinge, many of which he would bring home and save to be reused when the perfect opportunity would arise. He poured love into special pieces he would make for family and friends, including boats, paddles and a boat rocker for his granddaughters.

Artie did not seek lavish things in life. He preferred a hot day to float the Dan River with family and friends, trying to fish every inch of the river with a cold drink, most likely in a reused plastic bottle. Known for his jovial laugh, his mustache he only trimmed when he ate a sandwich, and wearing a shirt until it was worn thin, Artie loved the simple pleasures of life. He was always willing to share a story, crack a sarcastic joke and help anyone that needed a hand.

After an accident left him paraplegic in 2017, Artie's creative passions turned to beading. He would spend hours crafting hat bands, hair barrettes, bolos, broaches, and necklaces he gave to family and friends. These pieces are a lasting memory of Artie and his talents. His resilience and grit to take what the Lord gave him and make the best of it, was how he lived his final years. He left this earth peacefully with a heart full of love, just after sunset, serenaded by a symphony of summer bugs.

Artie leaves behind his wife, Carolyn; daughter, Meredith; son, Cory, his wife Lacie and their two children, Olivia and Evelyn. He is also survived by his mother, Jane Walch; four brothers, Eugene (Louie,Tim, Zachary, and Greg); and five sisters, Mary (Erin, Melissa, Marta, Matilda, and Catie). He also leaves behind numerous brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, and countless friends.

My boys loved Artie. He taught them to fish, throw a fish net and hunt for snipes. Yes, on one of our many camping trips to the Outerbanks there was a snipe hunt. One of our favorite memories. Artie will be missed by me andmy family.
My sincere condolences to Carolyn and her family. I love you all.

I am so sorry to hear about Artie´s passing! I went to college with his wife, Carolyn. We were all very good friends! We went on many camping vacations together at the beach. Wonderful memories. Artie impressed me; seemed he could do anything! We continued our vacations together even after we all had kids. I am deeply saddened by this loss. My heart goes out to Carolyn, Cory and Meredith and the rest of the family. I will keep everyone in my prayers.
