Frederick VOGLER Obituary

VOGLER CHAPEL HILL Frederick Wright Vogler May 27, 1931 - March 28, 2013 Frederick Wright Vogler, Professor Emeritus in the Dept. of Romance Languages at UNC, passed away March 28 at his Chapel Hill home. He was born in Burlington, VT, May 27, 1931. He completed the BA, MA, and PhD degrees in Chapel Hill, his father's alma mater, where he later taught and also served in varied administrative positions. For many years, he was actively involved in the Philip Christoph Vogler Foundation, Inc., a family organization of descendants of Swiss-German pioneers who settled first in Maine, then in North Carolina in the mid-18th-Century but whose roots have been traced back to the Zurich area of Switzerland for many generations prior to their emigration to North America. After helping establish that European background and describing it in the chapter he contributed to the Foundation's family history book published in 1994, he served as President and Board Chairman of the Foundation from 1994 to 1996. In 1992 and again in 1997, he helped organize family pilgrimage trips to Switzerland for the Foundation, also serving as tour guide on both occasions. He is survived by his wife, Mary Frances; one son Robert Frederick and wife, Ann, of Arlington, Va.; and three grandchildren, Katherine, Colleen, and Robert. Services will take place April 5 at 2:00 at the Chapel of the Cross, followed by interment in the churchyard and a reception for friends in the church parlor. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorials be made to the Chapel of the Cross Capital Campaign or to a charity of one's choice. As a fellow Vermonter, Francophile, and UNC alumnus, I had much in common with Dr. Vogler and took every class I could with him from 1997-2001. He nurtured my love of French language and culture and I will always hold fond memories of him. In a return of one of his favorite classroom expressions: "C'était un homme digne de respect." It was a pleasure knowing him.

Dr. Vogler,
Even though I only had the honor of speaking with you a few times, that was enough for me to see what a kind and gentle soul you had. Your legacy is one of service to your fellow man.

You were a man loved by many, because you showed many love. Your memory lives on in the lives of the many you have touched. It was a privilege to have met you and I am better for knowing you.

Rest in peace, sir.

My deepest sympathy to his family.
He was chairman of my dissertation committee in 1979 at UNC Chapel Hill.
I will always remember him as a warm and caring person. Paul Carter, UNC 1979

I loved seeing him at Chapel of the Cross every Sunday morning. Just a week or so before Dr. Vogler passed away he wrote a recommendation letter for me. His sense of humor, his kindess, and his enthusiasm for his work and life was priceless. We will miss him so much. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family whom he obviously loved so much.

Fred and Mary Frances were the first new friends my partner Stanley and I made as a young couple 33 years ago. They opened their home and hearts to us with grace and gin. It was quite a time! We will always remember Fred's sweet disposition, his hypnotic voice, his handsomeness, and his scholarly aplomb.

Fred was a very good friend! He was a dedicated Christian and a fine scholar.
