Gene Stewart Obituary

Gene Stewart

June 2, 1948 - October 3, 2024

Floyd Eugene "Gene" Stewart, Jr., beloved husband, father, grand-father, brother, and friend, died on October 3, 2024 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice House in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He was 76.

Born on June 2, 1948, in Rome, Georgia, Gene developed a love for storytelling early in life and enjoyed the works of southern writers. He was particularly inspired by Eudora Welty and James Dickey. Gene wrote hundreds of short stories and poems throughout his life, reflecting his experiences growing up and living in the South.

Gene met his wife, Margaret Morgan Stewart, in 1962. They married in 1969. Together they shared 55 years of love and companionship.

Gene attended Wake Forest University, where he majored in English and was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha, graduating with the Class of 1971. For over 50 years, he was a fixture at Wake Forest basketball, football, baseball, and soccer games. He also enjoyed watching English Premier League football and cheering on the Atlanta Braves.

Gene spent the majority of his professional career at Baptist Hospital, from which he retired in 2012 after serving in various roles, including president of Triad Radiographic Imaging. His commitment to his community extended beyond his work. He coached his son's baseball teams for Winston-Salem National Little League, soccer teams for Winston-Salem Optimist Soccer, volunteered at Reynolda Gardens, and cherished time spent with his close group of friends. In recent years, Gene found fulfillment in his involvement with Alcoholics Anonymous, where he formed deep connections and rediscovered joy in service to others.

Gene's legacy is marked by his love of writing, dedication to family and friends, and his sense of humor. He leaves behind his loving wife, Margaret, of Winston-Salem; son, Morgan, daughter-in-law, Meghan Jobson, and granddaughter of San Francisco; sister, Susan Stewart and sister-in-law, Dianne Williams of Anderson, SC, all of whom will carry on his memory.

A celebration of his life will be held Sunday, October 6th at 3 p.m. at Salem Funeral Home, 2951 Reynolda Road in Winston-Salem where friends and family are invited to share stories and reflections on Gene's life. Condolences can be left at www.salemfh.com.

I met Gene while we were freshmen at Wake Forest in 1966, and we saw each other through the years at basketball games, around town and for a while recently while in attendance at a Wake Forest fitness program. I din not know Gene overly well but considered him a friend--based on my tendency to feel better when I had been around him! His sense of humor was, I'd say, superb. My sincere condolences of course to Margaret and the family. May he be blessed and rest in peace. +

Dear Stewart Family -
Very sorry for your loss.
We had a good time working in the dirt at Reynolda Gardens. Always enjoyed his stories of his time at Wake Forest and attending parties at Graylyn when it was Student Housing. Well written obituary!
May he rest in peace.
