George Kimmer Obituary

Mr. George Hubert Kimmer, 83, loving father and grandfather with an enormous giving heart, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004, after being in declining health for one month. He was born in Davie County on Dec. 11, 1921, the son of John F. and Emma Beck Kimmer. Mr. Kimmer served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He saw action in the European Theatre and was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds he received and the Bronze Star for valor. He worked for P.H. Hanes Knitting Co. for 20 years and retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. at the age of 65. Mr. Kimmer was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Dewey Foy and Fred Kimmer; and sisters Alma Beck and Ellen Steele. Surviving are a daughter, Rose Mary Kimmer Sowers and husband Tommy; a longtime friend and devoted companion of 30 years, Margaret Huband and her family; four grandchildren, Chad Sowers and wife Christa, Danny Sowers and wife Dianne, Sonya Link and husband Kevin and Tonya Hutchins and husband Tim; seven great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sister Bertie Draughn; sister-in-law Violet Kimmer; a niece; and numerous nephews. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 24, at Westlawn Gardens of Memory with military honors and with the Rev. Mark Blair and the Rev. J.B. Parker Jr. officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 this evening, Dec. 23, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. A special thanks to the staff of Forsyth Medical Center for their loving care. Memorials may be made in honor of his companion, Margaret, to the Western Carolina Chapter Alzheimer's Association, 545 N. Trade St., Suite 33, Winston-Salem, NC 27101.
