Gilbert Slawter Obituary

STATE ROAD - Mr. Gilbert Andrew Slawter, 83, of State Road passed away Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2006, at Britthaven of Wilkesboro. Mr. Slawter was born Dec. 4, 1922, in Surry County to Emory Ellis and Nevada Collins Slawter. Mr. Slawter was retired from Chatham Manufacturing and was of the Baptist faith. Gilbert was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend to many. He loved gardening and sharing his crops with family and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant sister, Pauline Slawter. Survivors include his wife, DeEtte Newman Slawter, of the home; three sons, Larry Slawter and wife Dianne, Steve Slawter and wife Darlene and Rick Slawter and wife Bonnie, all of State Road; three brothers, Elbert Slawter of State Road, Hazel Slawter of Flint, Mich., and Wilbert Slawter of Thomasville; two sisters, Thelma Gentry and husband Roger of State Road and Alma Martin and husband Junior of Jonesville; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 4, at Poplar Springs Baptist Church, with the Rev. Steve Kramm officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mr. Slawter will be at the church 30 minutes before the service. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 this evening, Aug. 3, at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials may be made to Poplar Springs Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 38, State Road, NC 28676. Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin is serving the Slawter family.
