Dear Mrs. Horton and Rosalie, I am sorry to hear of your loss. Mr. Horton stands out in my mind from a very young age, for the way he always stopped to genuinely talk to us children at Calvary Moravian, in a way few adults do for children. I have lost count of how many times, since I began practicing law, I have wondered what he would do or think about a situation. I've emailed him in Raleigh from time to time for advice, as recently as a few months ago. There's nothing about him any person would not want to emulate.

Dearest Evelyn and Rosalie,

I have never known a more kind person than Ham. His love and caring for others and for me has influenced my life continually during my journey. Each Easter I looked for him to step off the bus on his way to breakfast before the Sunrise Service. Always greeting me with a firm handshake, a gentle smile and an inquiry as to how I was doing. My spiritual life has been richly blessed by his teaching in Sunday School, by his example in worship and by his ability to to live life with just the right amount of what ever was needed in the moment. My prayers are with you and Rosalie. I'll miss Ham. I loved him.

Blessings,

Jim

Dearest Evelyn and Rosalie,

Denny and I were in Ham's Sunday School class during our college days. His teaching style caused us to defend our beliefs with a Christian Scholar. He helped us define our beliefs, appreciate our Moravian heritage, and carry our faith in our daily lives.

We truly loved his contributions of music and wit in our Moravian Band. I find comfort in knowing that Ham and Denny will be buried beside each other in God's Acre. May God's abiding peace surround you in the days ahead.

Christian love,

Jean Lewis Fordham

I served on the Moravian Archives Prov. Board with Sen. Horton.

That's when I learned about his good common sense, his good humor and his concern for his fellowman. Ham will be greatly missed.

Dear Evelyn and Rosalie,

Ham's absence in the lives of his nieces and nephews will be a larger void than you know. He was their link to their mother's family, and he filled it admirably. We all cherish his caring and being there for them, in addition to our appreciation for the example he set as a very special human being as he lived out his highest principles.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

With love, Harold and Fran

The Tar Heel State has known no finer son or public servant, the legal profession no more honorable member, and nature no greater trustee than Hamilton Cowles Horton Jr. And those of us blessed to have been called "cuzz" with his inimitable eloquence will cherish the memories of Ham's truly good life.

Evelyn and Rosalie,

My deepest sympathies on the loss of your husband and father. Ham was a great and gifted man on many levels but in all facets of his life, he was a perfect example of what God expects a human being to be while on this earth. I knew him as the legal counsel for the Moravian Music Foundation and a fellow Helicon player in the Easter Band. He certainly will be missed.
