Herbert Dodd Obituary

DODD WINSTON-SALEM - Herbert Ritchie Dodd, born August 15, 1912 in Galax, VA passed away Thursday, December 30, 2010 in Birmingham, AL. Mr. Dodd was preceded in death by his loving wife, Jewel Burgess Dodd; his parents, Herbert and Mary Dodd; brother, James Dodd; and sisters, Mary Young, Georgie Holloway, Aileen Smith, and Evelyn Smith. Survivors include daughter, Diana Wells (husband, Gene); son, Ritchie Dodd (wife, L'udmila); granddaughters, Kristen Woods (husband, Richard), Stefanie Monforte (husband, Tim) and Carrie Dodd; and four great-grandchildren. Other survivors include brother, Lewis C. Dodd; sisters-in-law, Cornelia Kelly, Melba Siddons, Jackie Clinard, and Barbara Burgess; and brothers-in-law, Richard Smith and Reid Burgess. No one loved music and sports more than Herbert. One of his greatest gifts for storytelling will be passed down for generations to come. He will be missed and remembered fondly by all who knew him. Mr. Dodd worked for R. J. Reynolds as a young man. He resided in Norfolk, VA for 52 years where he worked at the Army base and retired from the State of Virginia. He returned to Winston-Salem and was a member of Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church where he will be laid to rest. A Memorial Service will be held at the Church on Saturday, January 8, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Doug Hochmuth and Rev. E. Lee Ellis Officiating. Family visitation at 1 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church or the charity of your choice. Online condolences maybe made at www.hayworth-miller.com.
