Jack Long Obituary

LONG Jack Russell Long, 82, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2008, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. Mr. Long was born March 31, 1925, in Harrisburg, Pa. He graduated from Milton Hershey High School in Hershey, Pa. After graduation, he studied fine and commercial art at the Imperial Art School and Advertising Art Students League in Philadelphia, Pa. During World War II, he served in the Army Air Force. His plane was shot down over Asola, Italy, where he was taken into hiding and given protection by an Italian family that he remained in touch with his whole life. After working 33 years as a technical illustrator, he retired from AT&T. He was a member of Bethabara Moravian Church where he enjoyed serving as an usher and helping with the Fall Festival. He was preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Clara Long; his stepmother, Katie Long; his son-in-law, Bruce Drake; and a brother-in-law, Raymond McMillan. He is survived by his wife, Gloria Sizemore Long; daughter Linda Drake; two granddaughters, Shannon and Megan Taylor of the home; a brother, Alton Long (Emily) of Pottstown, Pa.; a brother-in-law, Butch Allen, and sister-in-law Bernice Allen of Winston-Salem; a sister-in-law, Barbara McMillan of Burlington; and several nieces and nephews. His funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 1, at Bethabara Moravian Church, with the Rev. Tripp May officiating. Interment will follow in Bethabara Moravian Graveyard. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall 30 minutes before the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bethabara Moravian Church, 2100 Bethabara Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106, or Hospice and Palliative CareCenter, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. The family wishes to extend a special thanks to Dr. Judith Hopkins and her staff and all the special caregivers from Hospice for their excellent care. (Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel)
