Jacob Mayo Obituary

MAYO Jacob Mayo, 19, of 246 Canterbury Drive, Winston-Salem, passed away Saturday, May 26, 2007. Jacob was born Jan. 22, 1988, to Peter and Kathy Mayo in Atlanta, Ga. Jacob was of the Christian faith and was a 2006 graduate of Ledford Senior High School. Jacob had a passion for wrestling and was a member of the Ledford High School Wrestling Team. His love for the sport made him an All-Conference wrestler in the 215-pound weight class. He was greatly respected by his peers and teammates. Jacob was described by his family as big-hearted, always pulling for the underdog, and was voted by his peers as "most mischievous" his senior year. He loved children and of late felt a calling to one day become a youth minister. He was a practical joker and very protective of his sister, Shannon, and considered himself to be her guardian. Jacob was preceded in death by his grandparents, Richard and Betty Mayo. Jacob is survived by his parents, Peter Mayo of Charlotte and Kathy Mayo of Winston-Salem; his grandparents, Norville and Jennifer Bowyer of Roanoke, Va.; a sister, Shannon Mayo of Winston-Salem; a brother, Nick Mayo of Winston-Salem; four aunts, Cindy Slawson of Denver, Colo., Donna Rosenson of Mexico, Elizabeth Ellis of Decatur, Ga., and Kathy Burgess of Roanoke, Va.; three uncles, Dan Bowyer of Colorado Springs, Colo., Rick Mayo of Decatur and Paul Mayo of Falls Church, Va.; and several cousins. A memorial service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 30, in the sanctuary at Pinedale Christian Church, 3395 Peter' s Creek Parkway, Winston-Salem, with Danny Spainhour, Jeff Marks and Bill McKenzie officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 this evening, May 29, at J.C. Green and Sons Funeral Home, Wallburg Chapel, Winston-Salem. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Ledford Boosters Auction, (memo "New Gym Project"), 140 Jesse Green Road, Thomasville, NC 27360. Online condolences may be made to the Mayo family at www.jcgreenandsons.com.

Kathy, you can be proud of the son you raised in Jacob. I know you miss him terribly and your heart aches for him. The bond you shared with Jacob is stronger than life itself. You would beam and the "proud mama" would shine on your face when you spoke of him. Jacob brought you and all of us so much joy and laughter. I know without a doubt he loved and adored his Mom and his family as well. That was obvious. Jacob's smile, dancing eyes, sense of humor and huge personality will never be forgotten by those who knew and love him. We will always love him. God Bless and be with you, Nick and Shannon. We love you and continue to remember you in our prayers.

To Kathy, Peter and All of the Mayo Family,
I was deeply saddened by the news of the loss of your son Jacob. Though I had not seen him since he was a youngster, I have always kept up with the family through the years from your sister(in-law), Kathy. He had grown to be a beautiful son and brother. Keep his memory strong and may your love for him never fade. Please know that I am thinking of you at this time. ALL of the Mayo Family are in my thoughts and prayers.

Dear Pete, Kathy, Nick, and Shannon:
I could see a bit of each of you in Jacob which made him the wonderful mix of who he was - humor, heart, strength, mischief, and courage. The twinkle in his eye and ability to make anyone laugh, which I often did - to tears, always brightened our time together. Even though the visits with Jacob as of late were small or not at all the thoughts and love were always there and I knew that at some point we could all share that again. The future here will not be the same without his contribution in the way that we knew it but I feel as if he's already making his presence known in little ways and hope each of you smile and laugh a little when you sense him near. Thank you for allowing me to share time with each of you and Jacob. Love, Katrina

To the Mayo family:
I am Jacob and Josh Gregory's sister and I have spent a lot of time with the boys but when they were little. Doing the Scout thing and t-ball and all that fun stuff a long time ago. Nick, Jacob, my brothers, Dustin, Cameron, etc. So, I remember them all when they were little. Now that they've all grown up, I call them my babies. I see them at parties and at each others houses, and it's gonna be hard not seeing Jacob too! We are hurting for you guys and we are praying for you as well. God is everything and Jacob is safe with him now!

I can only image the grief that you are experencing right now.
And I know that the pain that I feel is only a fraction of yours.
I pray that you are comforted now by the thoughts of Jacobs wonderful life and of how full it was.
Jacob had an impact on everyone that he came in contact with.
He touched many and he will touch many more yet.
I feel that Jacob had a love for God in his heart and an understanding of life and that it is meant to be lived to the fullest- every moment.
I will carry him in my heart everywhere I go.
He gives me hope for the future and a love for all things in life.
With every step from now until the end- he will me on my mind and with me always.
I keep you all in my prayers as you are experiencing the mixed emotions of greiving the loss of a loved one and having peace knowing that he's now with his creator.
I love you all.

Dear Kathy,Nick, and Shannon,
I'm sorry I couldn't be with you and lend my support at this tragic and difficult time in each your lives. Although I really didn't get to know Jake well prior to the Mayo family reunion in June of 2005,I did get to spend a lot of quality time with him and his siblings during that wonderful week at our home in Henderson, Nevada. Jake was a very special young man whose hulk was dwarfed by his warmth and the size of his heart. The one on one time I spent with him during that special week cannot be replaced and, for me, will always bring into sharp focus the mischievious twihkle in his eye and his wonderful broad smile. Donna and I love you and will always be there for you.

The Mayo Family,
You have lost a tremendous rung on your family ladder. I'm certain Jacob is at the top praying for your hearts to heal. He's made it to the top where he is content and happy. Maybe he's found the serenity that only God could give him. I'm sure he'll liven things up in heaven just like he did on earth. I know you'll miss him terribly, but remember, there is no sadness in heaven, just lots of laughter and happiness. They're only a second away in what seems like forever to us. May all your memories bring a smile to your face.
Sincerely, Lynda & Lindsay Whitehurst

Dear Kathy, Nick and Shannon,
Heaven just keeps getting sweeter and sweeter. Kathy, after talking with you last night, I thought not only about how much sweeter Heaven is but how much brighter it is shining with Jacobs smile and laughter! You have indeed done a wonderful job raising Nick, Jacob and Shannon! Take comfort in that. Our hearts are broken for you and with you. Our prayers are for God to hold you gently in His arms and comfort you as only He can... as you adjust to Jacob smiling down on each of you from Heaven.
We Love You!

Kathy, Nick, and Shannon,
Words cannot express how much my family and I loved Jacob. He was like a little brother to me and Tabetha, another son to my mother, a brother and true friend to Danny, and "Uncle Jake" to Teagan and Teahlyn. I was just telling you Kathy how I have always thought the world of Jacob and how special he was to our family. He will be truely missed and ALWAYS loved and remembered for nothing less than the angel he is. He touched any life that he came in contact with by that contagiuos personality, great sense of humor, and loving nature. Any and all that knew him were truly blessed to have known such a wonderful being. We know with out a doubt that he is with our Lord now being taken care of in every way. I am sure he will be watching over us all. You are all in out thoughts and prayers. We love you all.....

When I heard of the accident early Saturday morning I immediately started praying for the unknown. I made a few phone calls to pass on the information that I knew through my contact, I asked that they would pray. I searched my mind for every avenue to find out more information to prepare my daughter, just in case it could have been fellow class mates. It was that afternoon when the names reached our house through the "Ledford Grapevine", we were saddened and very destraught that it hit close to home in our hearts with the bond that once was between Amber and Shannon. Kathy, our hearts ache for you and your family, and our prayers are asking God to comfort you in this dire time of need, and he will stand with you and strengthen you for your journey into the future with your loss. God Bless you all.

Family Members,

I did not know Jacob that well, after growing older. But we did have great times when we were all younger, playing baseball, basketball, and hide n seek in our back yards.

But I know that Jacob was a very special person, and was always smiling as he waved going by our house daily.

He will be greatly missed, but always loved.

We send our sympathy, and hope you will let us know if there is anything ever needed.

Jacob will live on forever in our hearts and will always live within us.

Jacob you will be missed, but NEVER forgotten.
