James Sanford Bates, Jr.

September 12, 1939 - February 21, 2025

James Sanford Bates, Jr., 85 of Winston Salem passed away Friday, February 21, 2025 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. James was born September 12, 1939 in Forsyth County to the late James Sanford Bates, Sr. and Cassie Goodman Bates. He was a member of Woodland Baptist Church in Stanleyville. James worked many years as a mechanic and was employed by R.J. Reynolds and retired after thirty-three years. He served as a member of Gumtree Fire Department for thirty years. James enjoyed NASCAR, and cheering for his favorite driver, Dale Earnhardt. He also enjoyed watching pro-wrestling. The greatest joy in life was the time he spent with his family, especially his grandkids. Along with his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters, Phyllis Hamby and Peggy Keaton; two brothers, Alden Bates and Charlie Bates.

Surviving is his loving wife, Carol Jane Haga Bates of the home; two sons, Jim Bates, III of Winston Salem and Michael Bates and wife April of High Point; three grandchildren, Lily Bates, Luke Bates and Jack Bates.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.jcgreenandsons.com.
